Film scholar David Bordwell to speak at UNCW

The Department of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is pleased to announce a series of lectures for the Moviemakers and Scholars Series, given by the prominent and renowned film scholar, David Bordwell. There will be three opportunities to hear Dr. Bordwell speak on Tuesday, February 19, 2008: • 9:45am, King Auditorium (KI 101) Lecture on Yasujiro Ozu (part of FST 385: Japanese Cinema) • 1:30-2:30pm, King Auditorium (KI 101) Hollywood Storytelling Q&A (part of FST 376: American Cinema 1927-1960) • 7:45pm, King Auditorium (KI 101) Lecture on Cinemascope All lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in King Hall Auditorium. Free parking is available on-site. Accommodations for disabilities may be requested by contacting 962-7502 three days prior to the event. David Bordwell is one of the world's leading scholars of film. Along with his wife, Kristin Thompson, he wrote the two major textbooks for the field: Film Art and Film History. Beyond these, Dr. Bordwell's many interests are reflected by his variety of books, ranging from studies of Hong Kong cinema, to the classical Hollywood studio system, to issues of narration and storytelling in film. His most recent books include: Poetics of Cinema (Routledge, 2007), The Way Hollywood Tells It: Story and Style in Modern Movies (University of California Press, 2006), and Figures Traced in Light (University of California Press, 2005). As an internationally celebrated researcher, professor, and leader of the film program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Bordwell has inspired generations of film students to pursue cinema scholarship.
