Firemen fill their boots

READ MORE:

If you drove through Monkey Junction this weekend, you may have noticed firefighters holding their boots in the middle of the road. They were holding the annual "fill the boot" fundraiser. The Myrtle Grove Volunteer Fire Department has been doing it for the past six years to raise money for the muscular dystrophy association. The idea is to fill their boots with as many donations as possible. “It's doing pretty well today,” Myrtle Grove fire chief David Raines said on Sunday. “We've got a lot of help out on the street, the traffic seems to be flowing pretty well, and we're getting an awful lot of donations.” Last year the firefighters filled their boots with more than $20,000. Raines says they hope to top that this year.

Great cause...bad timing!

I always support our volunteer firefighters and really appreciate everything they do. I contribute in nearly everyway possible and consider them essential to our community. I support their need for donations, but strongly believe that staging that activity at Monkey Junction during rush hour traffic on a Friday afternoon was nothing other than bad judgement. There is enough congestion, confusion and accidents already occuring without the distraction of flashing red lights, EMT vehicles and people patrolling the medians with their boot out for money. Do this Saturday through Monday, but Friday at rush hour??? Come on, that is absolutely ludacris!!!! Anyone able to provide a count of accidents for that day?

Accidents ?

Accidents = 0 Assist broken down Motorist = 1 Assist tourist with directions = 20+ Assist motorist who lost there load = 1 Children helped by money raised = countless Problem is not the people in the road it is the "people in a rush". Slow Down and Drive Safe.
