UPDATE (5/11): We've learned 22-year-old Daniel Brennick is in fair condition today...

###########

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A man accused of driving drunk and killing a 38-year-old mother Friday night, could face second degree murder charges. Highway patrol says 22-year-old Daniel Brennick was drunk and speeding when he crossed the center line and hit Satu Harris's car head-on.

The Brunswick County District Attorney's office is working with Highway Patrol to try and charge Brennick with second-degree murder. this is not brennick's first run-in with the law.

It was almost midnight when Harris was driving south on River Road near the intersection of NC 133. Highway Patrol says Brennick was driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck when he crossed the center line and hit Harris.

Troopers say Harris was trapped in her car after the collision and died at the scene. Brennick was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries.

The Highway Patrol charged Brennick with driving while impaired. This is not the first time Brennick has been in trouble. His record includes reckless driving and driving while consuming a controlled substance under the age of 21 in 2007, along with assault of an officer in 2006.

Harris was a UNCW graduate, who loved animals and photography. She leaves behind three teenagers.

Friends set up a Facebook page in honor of her life. Many have posted comments and pictures remembering her as a fun-loving, free-spirited woman.

A NHRMC spokesperson says Brennick is still in the hospital and is in serious condition.

A gathering celebrating the life of Harris is scheduled for tomorrow at 5 p.m. on the beach at Ocean Drive and Womble Street in Oak Island.

FAIRNESS ?????????????

I JUST DONT GET IT !!!!! MY NEPHEW WAS KILLED THE SAME EXACT WAY, BY A DRUNK DRIVER WHO HAD PRIOR CONVICTIONS, AND THE MAN THAT KILLED HIM GOT OFF WITH 3 MONTHS IN THE DART PROGRAM, A PROGRAM FOR ALCOHOLICS. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SINCE, WHY WASN'T HE CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER, WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM? WHY ISN'T ALL CONVICTIONS TREATED THE SAME? WHY DIDN'T THIS MAN GET CHARGED WITH MURDER? DO YALL REALLY THINK IT'S FAIR TO FAMILIES? OR IS IT ALL IN WHO YOU KNOW? ACCORDING TO THE DA'S OFFICE, THE CHARGES BOUGHT AGAINST THIS PERSON IS ALL THAT COULD BE DONE. WELL I SEE DIFFERENT NOW. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH BRUNSWICK COUNTY????

EVERYBODY ON HERE IS ACTING

EVERYBODY ON HERE IS ACTING LIKE HE MEANT TO DO IT. PEOPLE ACT LIKE THEY HAVE NEVER GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL AND HAD A FEW DRINKS. AND PEOPLE SHOULD LEAVE HIS FAMILY OUT OF IT!!!!

you are a piece of

you are a piece of trash.... defend the murderer go ahead.... probably your buddy.... Leland trash

The Truth of the Matter

The truth of the matter is that he did in fact mean to do it. He knew full well that he was intoxicated, and also that he was capable of causing a lot of trouble. I do believe he should be punished, because that is actually what the DOC is for. But I also believe that more should be done to educate even the ADULTS of our state and nation about the horrors and stupidity of drunk driving. It's not just the teens we need to worry about. And just so YOU know, I've never been drunk driving, so that's what I fully intend to "act" like I'm doing. You're obviously not the brightest neon highlighter in the bunch, so you should probably just stay out of it.

thruth about the matter

im charged with felony murder no dwi an have no prior dwi it was a driving after cosuming i feel remorse for harris's family an theres no apology that could explain the way i fell but shes not the only one who was lost that night ive lost my whole life cant walk my legs been amputated have extreme problems with depression an anxiety this has ripped two familys apart an has takken two human beings those that dont know me or satu are just speaking with false judgement

Friend

I re-read the article to be certain. There was no mention of his family.

But since you're such a good friend, let me ask:

1. Are you visiting him while he is in custody?

2. Will your visits continue after he enters a state facility of the state's choosing?

3. Should he not have insurance, or should it be insufficient to cover damages and the loss of life, will you be opening your check book to make contributions?

Just would be nice to know how far friendship goes after someone does something stupid.

We all know what he did was

We all know what he did was stupid, and we feel for Satu's family too. There are plenty of people who are visiting him, and yes more than likely will be visting him when he does go into a State faciltiy and all of his friends will be there to help him in any way they can. And again our Heart go out to the family and friends of Satu.

I don't care what he "meant"

I don't care what he "meant" to do. He was old enough to know better than to drink and drive. His actions killed someone, do you get that?

What about HER FAMILY?

To get behind the wheel of a car/truck KNOWING it is illegal, and WRONG. He knew before he had those drinks there was a chance that something could go wrong, but he didn't care, he still drank and drove. And because of his actions, PEOPLE DIED. That is not to be taken lightly. He has changed some many families lives FOREVER. People he never knew nor will ever know. I am sure he "feels bad" ~ as he should, but guess what, he feels NOTHING compared to the families of the people he KILLED. Getting behind the wheel drunk is just as bad as taking a loaded gun and shooting them.

Oh, and he cannot play innocent ~ he had many run ins with the law, so there tells you what he thinks and the lack of respect of the law.
He ignored what was right and a MOTHER died.
She had a FAMILY who now have no mother because of HIS LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE LAW AND IRRESPONSIBILITY. There is NO excuse for that. You saying "PEOPLE ACT LIKE THEY HAVE NEVER GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL AND HAD A FEW DRINKS" ~~~~~ That is giving him an "oh its ok, others do it, you didnt mean to KILL anyone"

Oh please ~ he MURDERED a person. She was a mother, sister, daughter, aunt ..... She died because of the ignorance of a BOY that thought he was untouchable, that he was invincible and thought he could beat the law AGAIN. There is no excuse for his actions what so ever.

My heart goes out to the family ~ you will be in our prayers ~

Do you have any common sense?

He did mean to do it, he made a choice. He chose to drive while intoxicated. Time to grow up cupcake.

death by vehicle

I feel deep compassion for all the folks involved. When I was 16 I killed a man while I was driving drunk. I am now 56. At that time, he left behind a 12 year old daughter and a wife. To this day I have not forgotten. I know that my Lord God has forgiven me and I have learned over these years to forgive myself but I'll never forget. My prayers go out to all who has been stricken by this tragedy.
God Bless you.

come on people.....

should he be charged? yes...will he be charged? yes. i have a very close friend that was almost killed by a drunk driver. so i understand the anger towards him. but this is certainly not his familys fault. this is a loss for his family as well as hers. no he isnt dead but he will never be the same. his kids will never know their dad. and his family has to live the rest of their lives knowing what a stupid decision he made. but still this was not their fault and if satu was as great of a person as everybody is saying she is she would understand where me and a few others are coming from on that fact. my friend never ever had any type of anger towards this guys family because it wasnt their fault. people make idiotic mistakes and tragedies like this happen but there is no reason to think badly of his family. he has kids too. and a mom and siblings and so forth....so as we all grieve the loss of satu my deepest reguards go out to daniels family for what they are having to endure during this as well.

When will people get it

When will people get it through their heads....drunk driving KILLS! If you cannot have enough foresight to have a designated driver then DON'T DRINK. It's real simple. Studies and statistics and events like this prove over and over again that driving under the influence is bad and can kill. This guy was apparently too selfish to take the threat he presented into account. Now a mother of 3 is dead. Since he made the choice to get behind the wheel drunk then it should be considered premeditated murder. Explain to me why he should not be punished?

Charges

To the County DA, please charge this guy with the maximum possible. He has shown a sickeningly callous disregard for the lives of others & he didn't learn his lesson from his prior offenses. To not punish him to the absolute fullest extent the law allows would be adding to this already tragic event.

Rest in peace, Satu Harris. I hope there will be justice for you & your children.

Youth is no excuse.

It's ridiculous that this boy's age is a factor here. EVERYONE knows that if you drink and drive you run the risk of getting into a crash and possibly killing someone. He knew this, and STILL got into a car and KILLED a woman. Her children are left motherless, her family in turmoil all because he had a few too many beers and decided to get behind the wheel. He deserves the harshest punishment possible. The fact that he has prior charges and run ins with the law over alcohol just goes to show that he didn't learn his "lesson" the first time. Too bad Satu had to lose her life to prove a point, and this kid's family have possibly lost a son. God bless, Satu. You will be greatly missed.

Mothers Against Drunk Drivers

Wilmington chapter of MADD:

I think you need to initiate more effort in publicizing the number of people killed by drunk drivers in Wilmington. Publicize the suffering and grief surviving family members and friends must deal with every day.

Point out that what is exacerbating the problem of drunk drivers is the attitude that in order to have a "good time" at a social event, alcohol needs to be served, and served in great amounts. Beer commercials always drive home this point.

And another thing, the bar owners in New Hanover County are nothing more that socially-sanctioned drug pushers. Yes, drug pushers. Alcohol is the #1 recreational drug of choice! But, hey! Lots of money to be made in bar business.

"Last call for alcohol!" And then another call to 911. DOA.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE! When are we going to finally hold people themselves accountable for there own mistakes? Even if the bars stop serving them that doesnt mean they wont get a friend to buy them or go to a gas station and buy beer there! Always blameing someone else for ones stupidity! Yes its tragic what happened and this person should be held responsible! But ive seen drunk people leaving bluewater, oceanic, portcity chop house, nikkis and ruth chris.....SHOULD WE SHUT THEM ALL DOWN ALSO! Get a grip people and blame the idividuals themselves, i dont think ANY bartenders twisted anyones arm to drink too much!

Bottom line

You are right I don't know either person. If you read my post again. You will see in the last line. I saying a prayer for both familes. It is a lost to both familes. Most of the time when you hear these stories. There is always a reason for why a person done something. They always try to blame someone or something else. Instead of themselves. that is what I meant by it. And the bottom line is some one is dead and someone is in the hospital. lost all the way around.

We love you Satu

We love you Satu

Consider what you are saying

I agree with everyone but some of these comments, concernmom and guestpappa especially, you obviously don't know the people involved and should probably keep your harsh comments to yourself. I know both people and I do think daniel should be punished to the full extent of the law, however, it is not necessary to bring his family into this or talk about his "child hood", say something dumb like "his wife left him" (he was not married by the way) or anything else you know nothing about. Also, he wasn't downtown so you should probably check your facts before you start pointing fingers. Satu was an amazing woman and will always be remembered as talented and nice to everyone she met. So please just remember there are family members involved in this tragedy and they don't deserve to have their loved ones trashed in a comment by someone who has no idea what or who they are talking about.

i agree..i didnt know satu

i agree..i didnt know satu but i have heard she was a great woman. on the contrary i dont know daniel either but i do know some of his family and it is a loss for both sides as u said. it is not the familys fault what happened so trash talking them isnt necessary at all. they had no control over what he was doing they werent even with him. it is a loss for his family as well as it is for hers.

Get a clue

You need to re-read what Concernedmom said - she didn't put that out there as fact, but rather just guessing what his excuse might be...
His family gets to see him (hopefully behind bars for the rest of his life) they get to tell him that they love him, they get to hear the sound of his voice. Something Satu's family and friends will never be able to do, again.

Should there even be any

Should there even be any hesitation? This guy killed her, charge him. It should be written into law as an automatic. What are we thinking? On another note every street should be blocked off downtown every Thur - Sat night from 10pm - 3am with only one way in and out through a check point.

Police need to determine

Police need to determine which BAR he had visited and the BARTENDER who served him.

As a resident of downtown, I frequently see young men and women stagger up to their cars, get in, and drive away.

Drinking and driving occurs on a regular basis in DOWNTOWN WILMINGTON, AKA "Alcohol Heaven."

Time to set up more late-night road blocks to check drivers' sobriety. Let's do it, Wilmington, and LET'S DO IT NOW!

On two occasions, I have nearly been killed by a drunk driver. Time for NC to get tough on drunk drivers. The time is NOW!

Actually bars can get in a

Actually bars can get in a lot of trouble with ALE if they knowingly over serve and a customer leaves and kills someone in a wreck but it is sometimes hard to prove where they were last when people bar hop.

OH YEAH

I think that all bars should be closed down if they cannot stop the drunk drivers they are serving!!!!

and...

If they can determine what bar he was in where he was overserved, they should be charged in connection as well and have their ABC permits REVOKED.

Charge this man

Charge this man and put him in jail. Why can't people think before that screw up somebody else day. She had nothing to do with him or what was going on in his life. And HE chose to get behind the wheel and drive.. Let me quess the reasons for his problems, no job, wife left him, poor child hood. Give me a freakin break. Grow up. Everybody got problems. I think he should be charge, and who is footing the bill for him in the hospital and the lawyers, etc.. my prayers go out to both families...

I'm not a lawyer

but, the driver was under the influence. The maximum charge should be filed and pursued agressively with no plea bargain.

Consider???

Consider?? Are you friggin serious? Consider?
He was drunk. He kiled her... 2nd degree murder... No questions.....
Oh wait..... unless it was a son of a politician or business leader from Brunswick County.. Them still tha good 'ol boys down yonder...
