First hotel in Leland celebrates with ribbon cutting

READ MORE: First hotel in Leland celebrates with ribbon cutting
There was an economic show of confidence Thursday as northern Brunswick County celebrated the grand opening of its first hotel. While the ribbon cutting comes in the middle of a tough recession, hotel owners are optimistic about the future of their business along Highway 17. They say one is the loneliest number, but Comfort Suites in Leland expects plenty of company. That's just one of the perks to being the only hotel in one of the fastest growing parts of the country. The Comfort Suites at Magnolia Greens has been open for more than a week, but business owners and community members came out for the official ribbon cutting on Thursday. “All of it coming to culmination today, this is fantastic. I know a lot of people are excited to have a hotel here in Leland, and obviously we're very excited as well,” said Barry Eagle, owner and operator of the hotel. Brunswick County has seen plenty of growth over the past few years, and is now the twenty-eighth fastest growing county in the U.S. With so many people coming and going, a hotel is long overdue. “We have folks call into the chamber all the time looking for a hotel to stay at in north Brunswick County rather than to have to travel to new Hanover,” said Terry Grillo of the North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce. Comfort Suites features more than 100 suites and a meeting room for up to 60 people. The North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce and Brunswick County Tourism Development say the amenities will help draw more businesses to the area and give visitors a place to stay. “We are a family destination, we're relaxing, we're quiet, and I think it's the type of place people are turning to in this economy,” said Mitzi York of the Brunswick County Tourism Department. “As business continues to grow we're going to need more and more types of these facilities,” Grillo added. Leland won't have to wait long. Two more hotels, a Best Western and a Hampton Inn, are scheduled to open in the area by the end of next year. A Holiday Inn is also coming to the Waterford community at some point. “We think there's enough business for all of us to be financially stable and very successful,” Eagle said. There is also plenty of hotel competition just over the bridge in New Hanover County, but guests who toured the hotel today said they were very impressed by the rooms and facilities at the new hotel.
