History and food come together for the upcoming Flavor of the Past Tour. All this week, we have been featuring historic locations around Wilmington and the restaurants they are paired with on the tour. There may be no better example of Wilmington's prosperous past than the Latimer House. The Flavor of the Past Tour will introduce you to the Latimer family and their historic home. Now serving as a museum, the house was built in 1852 by wealthy merchant Zebulon Latimer. Candace McGreevy, Cape Fear Historical Society, said, "He saw where the future was and he came down to the biggest town in North Carolina to be a merchant and he started going from there." As one of six historic sites on the tour, the Latimer House will feature historical re-enactments that parallel what's happening today. "One of the fun parts is that we are going to have the men in one of the parlors having cigars and brandy after dinner, and they are discussing something very exciting -- there is an election this year and there are two candidates vying heavily against each other. They will be trying to decide who they are going to vote for, sound familiar, even back in 1852," said McGreevy. The point behind the Flavor of the Past Tour is to bring history and food together. Fat Tony's in Wilmington will be providing food accurate to the time period. Fat Tony's chef Noah Smith said, "They didn't eat as good as we do now, the refrigeration wasn't there, things like that but I ended up finding a cherry and cranberry scone recipe I have a sample of it, and I drizzled it with molasses. Sugar was actually pretty expensive. Back then it was for the higher up people, so people would use molasses to sweeten." The Flavor of the Past Tour also includes stops at the Bellamy Mansion, the Cape Fear Museum, and the Hannah Block USO building. "It's a way to get people involved in the history of Wilmington, and they see a different thing each time," said McGreevy. The Latimer built house stayed in the family until it was bought by the lower Cape Fear Historical Society in 1963. Flavor of the Past is Saturday, August 23rd. 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Flavor of the Past tickets are $60. Call 910-798-4362.
