WILMINGTON -- Summertime and flip-flops... they go together like the sun and surf. Carefree as they may be, flip-flops can also cause pain and injury in feet and ankles. Dr. Edwin Martin is a Wilmington podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon who said he sees three to four patients a week during the summer complaining of flip-flop-related pain. Dr. Martin said flip-flops give little support and can lead to stress fractures and sprains. He said, "Wear them in moderation. They're not intended to be used for long periods of time. When you're looking looking to purchase flip flops or some type of sandal type shoe-wear, it's best to look at a shoe that has some support." Doctor Martin said he most often treats active people between 25 and 45 years old.
