Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue and Wildlife have released some more details following the lifeguard hit and run on the Fourth of July. Daniel Anderson, a 54-year-old lifeguard, was struck by the prop of a boat on Friday evening. Police say the boat is 30 to 50 feet in length, beige in color, with the name Coastal or Carolina Rum written in black on the stern. After the boat struck Anderson, police say it just kept going. Rauol Sosa and his girlfriend Candice were boating in the inlet when they saw Anderson flailing in the water. They pulled up in their inflatable boat, and rescued him. They said his leg was completely cut open, to the bone and he was spitting up water and having a hard time catching his breath. "He grabbed onto the inflation part of the boat, and his face was white, and he was telling me, I'm a lifeguard, and I just got run over by a boat, the prop has hit me, and there is another man in the water. So my girlfriend and I, pull him onto our boat, which is easier to do since we are closer to the water, and I was afraid of what I was going to see -- legs cut off, an arm missing," said Sosa. Anderson is out of surgery. He isn't expected to be released from the hospital until tonight or tomorrow. As for the person he was attempting to save, he floated safely back to shore. Again, police and North Carolina Wildlife Resources are asking anyone with information to call North Carolina Wildlife Resources at 910-632-9564.

Rescuers truck towed after saving lifeguard

Our friends Rauol and Candice came to our condo for a respite after saving this man. They had blood all over them and were both white as a sheet and needed to clean up. After calming down and eating a bite they left later that evening to return home, only to find that their truck had been towed. Their truck was parked on Scallop Lane at C.B. which has no signage stating 'NO PARKING'. (Three marines who just returned from Iraq and came straight to enjoy C.B. had their car towed as well.) As unfortunate as this is, Rauol and Candice say the $135.00 towing fee was worth it because they were able to save this man's life. However, we feel like our town is preying on unsuspecting folks as we watch this happen every summer. C.B. should do the right thing and post a sign otherwise stop ticketing and towing in unmarked areas. We wish Mr. Anderson a full and speedy recovery from his injuries and thank him for his bravery.!

I agree with the other

I agree with the other person, it is probably a case where they did not know what had happened however when news reports broke out about the possible name of boat and description someone should come forth and to tell their side of the story. Yes lifeguard should have had help instead of going out on his own but he had a split second decision and he done what he done..

Inlet rescue

Is it to my understanding he was trying to do a rescue in Carolina Beach Inlet? If so, this is a very dangerous place with boat traffic and currents and any rescue should have not been performed unless they did have a boat. The jet skier that was in trouble should have had a life vest to take them to safety which is North Carolina law. As an X-boater/ commercial fisherman I have been through Carolina Beach Inlet at least 100 times and not to defend the boater but there is a good chance they did not see the life guard or know that they hit him especially in that size of a boat. It is kinda like a Highway patrolman standing in the middle of the interstate at night trying to stop traffic without a car. The lifeguard should have called for assistance with the wildlife/sheriff/marine patrol. I hope the life guard recovers fully but I think more training for lifeguards should be in the future to keep this from happening again.

This action sucks. Dont blame the lifeguard if you are not going to blame the boater as well. If it was a large boat the skipper was well above the waterline where he should have seen the lifeguard. Frankly I think the tone of your letter SUCKS

no. What we need is for people in our society to stop hiding behind excuses & take responsibility for their actions! Someone knows who that boat belongs to! If they do not turn them in then they are just as guilty as the driver of the boat. They probably knew they hit him but were drunk & couldn't risk stopping! Nevermind this poor mans life was at risk! Not to mention they had to have seen it on the news by now! Jerks

you've got to be kidding me...

So you're saying, that because the jet skier wasn't wearing a life vest that he is not entitled to be saved from drowning? Secondly, do you have any idea how long it takes for a rescue boat to get to that area if one is needed to assist? More than enough time for a person to drown twice. I can't believe that you actually think the fault lies with the lifeguard instead of the boater. As an X-boater/ commercial fisherman you should know that when heading through an inlet you must always keep a good line of sight of what's in the water in front of you. You can't tell me that this boater neither saw the jet ski, the jet skier, the lifeguard, or his buoy in the water, nor heard the prop when it hit the lifeguard and chopped up his bouy too. There's no way, even with a boat that big, that the driver was not aware, unless of course they were intoxicated and impaired, which is what I have my money on. How 'bout the next time you or someone you know is needing assistance in the water, in plain sight of a lifeguard, we'll just have them wait and watch you drown until someone else can come to help you. Honestly, that's what lifeguards are for. Or maybe the lifeguards should just call you to come help, since you know how to do their job better than they do.
