Former Navassa cop sentenced to 32-41 years for sex crimes

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A former Navassa police officer will spend as much as 41 years in prison.

Jaymin Murphy pleaded guilty today to to one count of statutory rape, one count of first degree sexual offense, two counts of first degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and four counts of indecent liberties with a child. The charges resulted from incidents involving two separate victims.

Murphy was not a police officer at the time of the incidents involving the first victim in 2005 and 2006, but Assistant District Attorney Meredith Everhart told the court that he was still acting in a position of trust and authority over the victim at that time.

The more recent incidents with the second victim occurred in December 2009 and January 2010, and Murphy was a police officer with the Town of Navassa at the time of those incidents. According to Everhart, Murphy was assigned to investigate a case where it was alleged that someone had sent inappropriate pictures to the victim's cell phone. He used his position as a police officer during that investigation to get the victim to allow him to take pictures of her and to sexually assault her, and he stored pictures and videos from those incidents on his work-issued cell phone, which was recovered by law enforcement.

Under the plea deal Murphy will spend at least 32 years behind bars.

Public opinion of police was starting to rise slightly and then some dirtbag officer comes crawling out to drag it back down. Thanks pedo.

we just hook up the electrodes to these guys right after they are found guilty and be DONE with it...I for one am tired of paying money because of idiots like this. Taxpayers are the ones who get punished when people just cannot follow the law...

Navassa cop=child molester

I sincerely hope the family of the victims will sue the town of Navassa for his on duty conduct.

Navassa 'Police' Dept?

The Navassa 'Police' Dept for lack of a better word should be disbanded. It has been corrupt for many years and everyone knows it. The only reason it's there is so the locals can be shielded from another real law enforcement agency coming in and really enforcing the law.
