Former inmate speaks out

WILMINGTON -- In light of the recent death of Brunswick County Jail inmate Senaca Vaught, a former Brunswick County inmate spoke out about her concerns about the treatment of inmates. The woman didn't want her identity revealed, but felt strongly about what she said she saw when she served time in the Brunswick County Jail two years ago. She said, "I saw a lot of things going on that I didn't think was actually right." She said she was disturbed to see how guards treated a fellow inmate when the inmate didn't follow orders. "She wouldn't get up off the bed so the jailiff came in there and drug her out the bed and after she drug her out the bed, she almost hit her head on the floor and she sprayed some pepper spray in her eyes 'cause the girl started fighting back," she said. The former inmate also said she was denied immediate medical treatment and phone access. She said, "I just want to see a big change, an investigation done on the incident that happened with the young man inside the Brunswick County Jail." The last inmate death in Brunswick County Jail was in April 2005.

The cops do what they want, when they want, how they want, to who they want. The enforcement in jail...let me repeat, they do what they want, when they want, how they want, to who they want. I do recall someone in law-enforcement getting on tv to APOLOGIZE for the KILLING of a boy. I spent some hours in jail and .....do make me repeat it... I think you should get it. If you trust them...God help your ass because law abiding.....re-read what I wrote in the beginning, it still applies!!!!!! Go ahead, get infront of them on one of their bad days, did they ever RIDE YOUR ASS TO MAKE YOU MESS UP DRIVING>>>HUH????????
I too would like to see an investigation into this particular jail. My husband has been "under medical observation" for 30 hrs now, because he asked for an additional dose of Dr. prescribed Tylenol and muscle relaxer to get him throught the night-due to a fall he sustained because of the severe overcrowding issue in the jail. No one has been observing him-there are no cameras in the room which is 4x4', no tests done, no Dr. visit....this is clearly harassment. The jailers know that he is going to file a suit because he received no medical attention for 8+ hours after the fall onto his back. The jailers would not even go back to help him up from the floor and fed him nothing that day because he could not get up to walk down to get the tray. He has permanent nerve damage, according to the hospital physician-when the jailers finally decided to take him to the hospital. The people working in this facility have harrassed him at every turn. I have spoken with two county sheriffs, neither of which have done anything to aleve this situation. I could go on and on about the conditions at this facility-inmates slleping in water on floor, ceilings and falling ceiling dust being breathed, larceny by other inmates and the jailers turning blind eyes, etc etc. By the way, he is incarcerated on a non-violent crime for 30 days.
First I have to point out that you said that you husband is prescribed Tylenol but in the same paragraph you use the word "aleve" which is not a word in the English language. You may mean "alleviate" as in " to alleviate the problem my husband shut his pie hole and took his punishment like a man", but maybe I am the one confused. Or maybe you are spending to much time in the medicine cabinet. Second, have you seen the photo of that jail used in the story, I would not show that to your husband (although he probably has internet, cable, air conditioning). He might get really mad and have to be sedated. Can any one say Holiday Inn? I bet he wish's he had commited that crime in Brunswick County. And third, you "justify" your husband's actions by stating that he is in jail for a "non-violent crime". And that makes a difference why? You husbands a criminal, violent or non-violent. I do not care why he is there I just know the world is a safe place now.
"larceny by other inmates"..... criminals stealing from criminals? Ha!
I'm sure your husband never said or did anything to receive this kind of treatment either? Sorry, but I don't believe you. I have friends that work at the NHC Jail and they tell me all the time how an inmate will call their spouces and tell them the harrassment they are receiving, but somehow they always forget to tell them what they were doing. I'm not going to say you may not get harrassed to some extent, but I have no doubts that he is not completely innocent. Just remember that everything he is telling you doesn't mean there isn't more to the story. I bet you believe your husband is really innocent and doesn't belong in jail either.
TO COMMENT ON THIS TOPIC....THESE COMMENTS BY SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE RUDE. WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE AND GOD DID NOT MAKE ANY OF US PERFECT AND ESPECIALLY SOME OF THE ONES THAT ARE COMMENTING ABOUT THIS INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED. SO WHAT THAT THIS PERSON WAS A INMATE BEFORE...THEY STILL HAVE FEELINGS. PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSE TO MAKE MISTAKES AND LEARN FROM THEM...SOME MAY TAKE LONGER THAN OTHERS. THE ONE THAT SPOKE ABOUT THEY NEED TO GO TO CHURCH...YES CHURCH IS A GOOD THING AND MY FATHER IS A MINISTER AND HAS PASTORED A CHURCH FOR 30 YEARS AND THE BIGGEST HIPOCRITS AND SINNERS AND DEVILS IN DIGUISE ARE THERE...AND MAY BE YOU. SO CHURCH IS NOT ALWAYS EVERYTHING AND AS LONG AS YOU HAVE GOD IN YOUR HEART THEN THAT IS ALL YOU NEED!!!!! SO DON;T PLAY THAT ROLE ON A PERSON BECAUSE OF A MISTAKE MADE...BUT PRAY FOR THEM TO BE BETTER,DO BETTER, LIVE BETTER. DON'T BRING THEM DOWN LIFT THEM UP. BECAUSE THE ONE YOU THROW THE DIRT ON IT THE ONE THAT WILL SHAKE YOU (THE DIRT) OFF AND PACK YOU (THE DIRT) DOWN. THE IMMATE THAT DIED IS SOMEONE THAT I KNEW GROWING UP AND YOU CAN'T HELP WHAT GOD HAS PLANNED FOR YOUR LIFE...BUT YOU CAN HELP SOMEONE TO TRY TO LIVE THEIR LIFE FOR GOD!REMEMBER NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING ABOUT A PERSON AS PEOPLE DID ABOUT JESUS. AND NEVER POINT THE FINGER BECAUSE THREE POINTS RIGHT BACK AT YOU. READ PSALMS CHAPTER 51 VERSES 1-19. HAVE A BLESSED AND THANKFUL DAY.
...then obey the law. When you are arrested for breaking the law, then every law-abiding citizen has a right to judge you. Indeed, any one of us just might wind up sitting on the jury that hears your case and will be paid to judge you. Trust me - constantly defending these weasels with the "do not judge" lecture is doing them no good. They need to be judged AND CONDEMNED by **ALL** of society, because their conduct is totally unacceptable. You need to stop accepting criminal behavior as just another personality quirk, a slight rudeness that should be immediately forgotten. Use your power for good, to reach out and get to these people BEFORE they commit a crime.
Criminals should be treated as they have treated society...no sympathy for criminals...it's jail, it's not nice..it's punishment...get over it
There are innocent men & woman that are sitting in jail & prison. Until one learns the truth than you should never judge a person. Just because of their situation doesn't mean they are guilty. The law arrest innocent bystanders so they won't have to take the time to find the guilty party or when they aren't able to find the guilty party. As for the abuse that goes on the staff members do abuse the inmates and this is why there's so many lawsuits going on today.
There are some inmates that are abused, but it's a very rare case. There are more cases of inmates crying wolf than this situation actually happening. I have no sympathy for the losers and thugs that are in prison. I could care less if they get mistreated. Look at what they did to get in there. They obviously didn't care who they hurt so why should we care who hurts them
Frances said "The law arrest innocent bystanders so they won't have to take the time to find the guilty party or when they aren't able to find the guilty party." You figured it out Frances. We frame people all day just to hide the fact that we "falsely" arrest people every other day for crimes that they did not commit. What in the world will we do for fun now? Wow, and to think Frances broke this story and not some reporter from WWAY or the Star News, you should call Dateline or the Justice Department.I bet they have never heard this before. Free Thomas Wright (if he goes to jail).
if you want to see changes then you need to start going to church. otherwise shut your mouth. if your sorry a*s had not been in jail then you probably wouldn't have been drug out of bed in the first place. second, if you started fighting back while being drug out of bed then you deserved to be pepper sprayed. could of gotten one of those real cops who instead of using pepper spray could of just kicked your sorry a*s! when are you scum bags gonna learn an inmate shouldn't have any rights. you are the very one that put your self in there in the first place. quit freeloading off of the taxpayers dollars, get a life, get a job,or get the hell out of the country.
Question: How can a racist be a true Christian?
DID YOU SAY THE INMATE NEEDS TO GO TO CHURCH AND MAKE SOME CHANGES...RE-READ WHAT YOU WROTE (WHAT WOULD JESUS DO)! SOUNDS UNGODLY TO ME!!! A YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO TELL SOMEONE ELSE TO GO TO CHURCH...THAT INMATE MAY BE IN THERE BECAUSE OF 1 MISTAKE OR MAYBE TWO...BUT IF THEY ASK FOR FORGIVENESS FROM GOD...THEY DON'T NEED IT FROM YOU. SO TELL YOURSELF TO GO TO CHURCH AND WAS YOUR MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP!
you told me to go back and re-read what i wrote. and i did just that. then i went back and read what you wrote. how bout seeing if the lord will send you a hooked-on phonics kit. maybe then can we post a normal conversation. we're all praying for you!
75% of people in jail are Christian... So, church will help nothing. What does work are quality ethics and morality and being a useful non-destructive polite member of society. If you do not get those values when you are young you can forget it.
Once inside, that 75% rises to about 95%. It's funny how everyone finds religion in jail
Wow..................Poor thing! I cannot believe my tax dollars are going to pay for those jailiffs who treat those sweet little munchkins with such utter disrepect. I have had the opportunity to visit inside that facility and let me tell you................these are not stellar citizens. Funny how everyone screams how wronged they were while being incarcerated. I have to follow rules every day of my life. That's how I keep my JOB. It affords me the opportunity to not commit crimes which might lead to my incarceration. Get a life!
If the law catches me, I'll LIE. If I don't follow their directions, I'll make up a LIE and tell the judge. If the Media asks me a question,I'll make up stuff or leave out stuff in order to make me appear to have been wronged. After all, I am a CRIMINAL and we all know that I would never tell a LIE, especially if I was caught in the act. No Officer this isn't me. I just happened to be passing by and this stereo (or whatever) just happened to jump into my posession as you drove up. The point is...your source has no credability. Be thankful for the people that are guarding the critters in the cage, not everyone has the intestinal fortitude and/or drive to do the job. Heck, I think they should get a pay raise for all the vermin they have to deal with.
Golly gee, that just breaks my heart. The poor criminal decided not to follow orders, decided to fight and got sprayed. Lets all put our heads together and see if we can figure out what went wrong. Oh Oh, pick me, pick me! She decided to break the law and went to jail. She then decided not to follow orders and then she decided to fight. Boo hoo.
I agree with the most of the comments up to a point. Yes, if you do the crime, you will do the time - this is only appropriate. But we need to remember that these folks are human beings also. Remember that the Bible tells us to have compassion for the prisoners. But we also know that there are some that are not going to cooperate with any type of authoritative figure - that is why they are there in the first place. Each individual needs to be handled differently. BUT, if there is a report of abuse at the hands of jailers, each case should be looked at and if it is found that they are being abused, then action needs to be taken. I do take exception with you using an unidentified source for your story though. What she says may be true, but she could also have an "axe to grind" for being put in there in the first place. That is where the story becomes unfair because you have no collaboration. There is two sides to each story and you need to show the other.
Each prisoner must be treated the same to prevent some prisoners from getting better or worse treatment than others. If you ever worked in a jail or prison, you would understand. It's a different world in there. No offense, but the Bible has nothing to do with the jail. Remember the Separation of Church and State issue?
But the Bible does speak on how we should treat one another no matter what the situation may be. NO matter what these people should not be treated as animals.
NO - genius, I don’t recall the separation issue. What I do recall is a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote while in France that mentioned government not controlling the church. This became the launching post of liberal secular society. You don't want to mention the Bible. Have you been under a rock? Where do you think all modern forms of jurisprudence came from? If I’m dumb enough to get locked up, I’d better be prepared to face getting pulled out of my bed and pepper sprayed.
I was not saying that the bible wouldn't do some of those people some good. I was trying to point out that the jail is not allowed to make religion of any faith part of their policy. Inmates may receive aid from religious groups that are independant from the jail. The jail is part of the county government. The seperation of church and state issue was settled long after Jefferson and the other founding fathers were just a memory. I wish it were different, but it isn't. I believe in the "In God We Trust" motto too. It's interesting that you remember the letter that you referred to. You must be alot older than the rest of us.
If you want to be pampered, go to the Hilton. You have made many of us feel alot better about the Sheriff knowing that his "jailiffs", as you incorrectly put it, don't take any crap from the inmates. You notice that I didn't say guests. I suppose that she has been in and out of the system so much that she has combined the titles of Bailiff and Jailer into one word. In the simple words of that noted scholar Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon". LOL
all you people who are whining and complaining. THEY ARE PRISIONERS. if they want to be treat like other law abidiing people. people who seem to be able to function in society. then dont go to jail. damn thats whats wrong with our country. people are always trying to make it easier for the very few minority that just cant get it. it we would actually make jail a bad place. then maybe might try a little harder to act like they have some common sense.
You are right, that is what's wrong with our country. But on the other hand some people go to jail for things they have not done. I know this for a fact. The jailers up there do treat people badly and yes I would act out too if I was in jail for something I didn't do. I do not know the whole story on the death of the inmate. Don't say anything about people whining and complaining because you know if you were in jail you would do the same thing too. The whole brunswick county jail system isn't nothing but a joke anyway. The jails are over crowded so they are building another one which is going to be over crowded too. All they care about is money up there. I heard that they make so much a day on the inmates thats probably why they are over crowded.
The jail is overcrowded because the population has gotten bigger and the amount of idiots has increased with it. The sheriff's office should have built a 400 bed facility instead of a 200 bed that was over capacity the day it opened. As the population continues to climb, the population of the jail will continue to climb. People are going to break the law and they will go to jail. Prior to the current jail opening, there were several warrant and child support roundups that were cancelled because the jail was full. There was nowhere to put these fine upstanding citizens. I would hate to think for one second someone would actually think people get arrested and the number of inmates climbs just to bring money into the jail. Purely ridiculous.
It's funny how you talk about something you know nothing about. In the last year I have read probably 15 to 20 cases of men that have spent 20 years or more in prison for a crime they didn't commit. I guess it was their fault that they were wrongly accused and lost half of their life.
