Former UNCW coach Brownell named head coach at Clemson

WILMINGTON -- UNCW still does not have a new coach to replace Benny Moss, but the man Moss replaced is coming back to the Carolinas.

Clemson has hired Brad Brownell to replace Oliver Purnell as men's head basketball coach.

In a surprise move, Purnell left Clemson April 5 for the head coaching job at DePaul. The DePaul job was open after the Big East school fired Jerry Wainwright during the season. Wainwright was UNCW's coach before Brownell.

Brownell coached UNCW for four seasons, which included a NCAA appearance in 2006. After that season, he left for Wright State and was succeeded by Benny Moss, who was reassigned within the UNCW athletic department Jan. 29. The UNCW opening is the second longest in Division I basketball.

Former Seahawk guard Billy Donlon will be named head coach at Wright State on Wednesday, replacing Brad Brownell.

A good hire

Clemson got themselves a very competent basketball coach who I hope is successful in the ACC. UNCW does not recognize talent when they see it.

as much as I am not a supporter of Ms. Mehrtens, she was not the cause of Coach Brownel's departure. That honor goes to Ms. Mehrten's predecessor.
