Former Wilmington firefighter killed in NY

The Wilmington Fire Department is mourning the loss of a former colleague. Garrett Loomis was a Wilmington firefighter from September 2007 to January 2009.

He died yesterday while responding to a silo fire as a volunteer with the Sackets Harbor Fire Department in New York. He moved there to be closer to his parents. Loomis had climbed up the silo to investigate and was climbing down when the silo exploded.

His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Loomis was elected assistant fire chief for Sackets Harbor just last week.
