Former Wilmington firefighter remembered

READ MORE: Former Wilmington firefighter remembered

SACKETS HARBOR, NY (WWAY) -- Some Wilmington firefighters traveled hundreds of miles north to pay tribute today to a fallen friend. Former Wilmington firefighter Garrett Loomis died in the line of duty this past weekend in upstate New York. His funeral was this afternoon.

It may sound cliché, but firefighting was a natural calling for Garrett Loomis. At a young age, friends and family will tell you, this is wanted he wanted to do like his father and brother before him.

"In this dark moment we should all be comforted by the fact that Garrett was doing what his family has always done: helping people," family friend Rob Horr said at the funeral in Sackets Harbor, NY, where Loomis was assistant fire chief. "That is the fabric of the Loomis family."

"Garrett William Loomis was living the dream," Stephen Jellie of the Fort Drum Fire Department. "An accomplished high school student athlete, a distinguished college graduate, a professional firefighter, a pillar of this community."

He may be gone, but the stories, the photos, the spirit that is Garrett Loomis will live for years to come in this small, tight-knit community brought together today by tragedy.

"Garrett was always willing to help in the community that gave so much to him," friend Max DelSignore said. "Now we realize even more how much he gave back to each of us."

And he gave a lot to the Port City as well. Loomis was a firefighter in Wilmington from 2007 to 2009 before returning home to New York. The 13 Wilmington firefighters will return home tomorrow afternoon.
