Fort Bragg soldier killed while fighting in Iraq


FORT BRAGG (AP) -- A North Carolina-based soldier had died from injuries he suffered while fighting in Iraq.

Military officials say Private Marquis Jermaine McCants of San Antonio, Texas, was killed Friday when a bomb detonated during combat in Baghdad.

McCants was a trauma specialist with the First Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg.

McCants joined the Army in May 2005, and he completed combat medic advanced training in April 2006. The paratrooper has been awarded several military honors including the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

McCants is survived by his wife, two daughters and his parents.
