Fort Fisher Combat Fun Run

READ MORE: Fort Fisher Combat Fun Run
Are you gonna run today... Are you going to step up for soldiers?? Before we get to the competition at Fort Fisher,... Let's provide a bit of a backdrop about the location of Sunday's fun run.... Kevin Clark: "this is Fort Fisher, it's the Air Force Recreation Base and in that the NC National Guard also does training during the year for state and local law enforcement agencies." and proceeds from this race benefit Step Up For Soldiers, a local non-profit organization that supports returning soldiers with loss of limb injuries.. Proceeds will also benefit a Fallen Soldiers Memorial in Wilmington as well. As for most first time events, the participation was a bit light for the combat fun run... but for those who did turn out.... Cathy Colby: "and I figured why not come out and support the run for Step Up For Soldiers" And without further ado, they're off and running in the 5k fun run... 5 k is just over 3 miles.... In this case, it's a bright, sunny and extremely windy 3 miles... And it did not take long for Shawn McKee to make his mark at Fort Fisher... Shawn is your first place finisher..... and what does first place get? A dog tag of course. Shawn McKee - "it was pretty quick, the woods were hard...the woods and the wind so it slowed me down a little bit. Did you enjoy running for the soldiers today? Oh yeah, that's the only reason I came out here" and Brian Nelson finished in 2nd place... He was content with that... Now he just needs to catch his breath.. meanwhile, somewhere back in the pack a bit.... Amidst all the cheering,, lets see if we can find Cathy Colby again.... "can't wait until I get to the finish line." You're not alone... From Fort Fisher... John Rendleman WWAY News Channel 3....

Step-Up For Soldiers

Tom Russell started this fine non-profit and he does all he can to help our returning and injured soldiers. Such soldiers need groups like this that not only to take up slack from veteran organizations, but also, and just as important, to honor these injured soldiers, and show them that people in their own community remember and care. There are many good reasons for non-profits, let's not forget this one.

Step up for Soldiers

You are right, Tom Russell is an awesome guy for doing this for our Soldiers. I support him 100% ....everyone usually talks about doing something but he actually DOES. WAY TO GO
