Gangs growing problem in Pender County

READ MORE: Gangs growing problem in Pender County
PENDER COUNTY -- The Pender County sheriff's office says the number of gang members are on the rise. Gangs are typically reported as an urban problem, but law enforcement officers say rural areas are seeing more members, more symbols and more gangs. Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith says while gang violence is not currently a problem, there is an increase of gang markings on streets, signs and homes. Along a rural stretch of road in Rocky Point a street sign is marked with the symbol of Surenos 13, a primarily Latino gang, and one of the fastest growing gangs in Pender County. Sheriff Carson Smith says it's cause for concern. "We see gang markings, every now and then, some violence that might be associated with gangs, but it's the numbers and the markings that we're seeing that's getting our attention," he said. The Sheriff's Office has identified eight separate gangs in the county, including the well-known bloods and crips. They've left their mark in the Willow Bay community in Rocky Point. That sign has now been taken down. Willow Bay resident Edith Smith said, "Well, we have just learned about it recently that there were gangsters around here." Edith Smith says there have been break-ins and vandalism in her neighborhood. Right now, crypt signs are spray painted on her street. Smith said, "If you say anything to the children about doing stuff they will come back and do something on the road or to somebody's property or whatever." Just down the road people don't know if the problem is necessarily gangs. Willow Bay resident Betsy Casey said, "I think it's just kids when their parents are working, and they don't have anything to do, and they just walk around at night like hoodlums more or less." But the Pender County sheriff's office says the vandalism is more than just graffiti, it's a sign of a bigger problem. "We have seen an increase in gang activity in the county," Sheriff Smith said. "[It's] something that we're watching closely. We want to be able to do more; we're looking at ways to do more, to stop the growth. We don't want it to grow any more." The Pender County Sheriff's Office has just one detective handling at least 80 identified gang member's cases. Smith says he's working on growing the ranks and developing a gang unit.

State Senate sponsors gang forum

A state Senate-sponsored gang forum in Wilmington took place last night. It happened at UNCW's Warwick Ballroom. State Sen. Julia Boseman led the discussion along with several law enforcement agents from Wilmington to Raleigh. Wilmington resident and gang prevention leader Brandon Hickman was one of the speakers. He said Wilmington has a serious gang problem and gangs are recruiting members younger than many realize. Hickman said, "A lot of people don't understand the most dangerous people in Wilmington are teenagers, the age group of 12-16 because they shoot and ask questions later. And that's a dangerous situation because they have no respect for life and no respect for authority." Hickman says most people in Wilmington don't know how to combat gang activity or even want to admit there's a gang problem. Hickman recommends parents with teenagers look for behavior differences and changes in friends.

The problem with these kids

The problem with these kids is the fact that you have babies raising babies parents dont want to have to deal with there kids because it would take away from there time to do what they want to do or instead of being there parent there trying to be there friend and be kool but kids need you to be there friend but more importantly they need you to be ther PARENT!!!! now for our government it is there fault as well they stick there nose into a parents buisness when they dicipline there child and make most parents scared if they do social services will show up and they will be charged with something for giving ther kids a spanking i think we need more parents to give spankings and that will help bring back a respect for authority and as for the prison system thats a joke peoplr aren't scared of prison they get a free roof over there head food, gyms, cable all at the tax payers cost i say yo uwant to keep the streets safe then they need to bring back the day when prisoners busted rocks or built roads by hand and stop making prisons a nice place to stay and make it feared again as a place of hard labor bring back the term DOING HARD TIME!! but that want happen as long as you have greedy lawyers out there looking to get there money i could go on and on about this as i am a pender county resident my self but i think i have made my point get out and vote in your local elections and lets get people in these offices who want the same things andf put prayer back in our schools and start saying the pledge to our flag every morning in schools again lets get a sense of pride again GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!

Gangs

We as a people find it easy to blame, when we are at fault. We install corupt ignorant political figures who sell our communties out to greedy developers. We build homes that can't sell. We put in water lines with no water in sight, We build roads that create death traps. The list go on and on, what positive thing has been completed for the children of this county. We need several Boys and Girls clubs. We need after schools programs. We have parents who don't lead or protect their children. These kids roam and walk the streets because we have failed them. We have to collectively provide more for the children of our county.

willows bay home owner

I live in willows bay . The signs have been replaced several times due to vandalism. Last week it was not just a sign or road that got painted. They went yard to yard vandalizing and stealing.they even stole a car. so little johnny has graduated from dads garage to other peoples garages.lets see how cool they are when they get more than they bargain for. ASas As a homeowner of willows bay if i catch one of these little want to be thugs(gang or unruley kids) on my property. I assure you that i intend to protect what i work and pay for. So for all you Rocky point parents i would suggest that you know where your kids are.It is terrible that times have come to this. it use to be said that it took a village to raise a child now days it takes a village to control a child.

Gangs in Pender County

I guess it's time to go back to curfews for children under the age of 18. On school nites 9pm & on weekends 11pm. The only requirement to dropping out of school is to have a full time job first but they will lose their driver's license. If the police find a child out after curfew take the kid home, 2nd/3rd time keep the kid at the police station til the parents pick the kid up. If it becomes a problem make the kid do community svc, required to attend class everyday & make a certain above average gpa, plus if the kid is over 14 then make him/her work at a job all at the expense of the kid & parents. But you can't blame the kids because they learn from the adults. They are learning from our leaders that it's ok to break the rules if it doesn't suit them, they watch other adults break the rules, relax with a beer or take a drug to get through the day or the parents are working all the time to pay for the increase in cost of living because this area doesn't pay enough to barely live day to day. With the increase in urban growth & a decrease in social services then I expect gang activity to increase in every area.

Parents be Parents, make them pay by hard work

Parents need to stop being so quick to push little johnny out the door and KNOW what they are doing who are they hanging with and what are you giving them money for? AND Parents as long as they are minors you are accountable for them. They are in your house that you work for and keep up.Keep them in school. Get PUNKS out working for a living. Don't just push them through the system. Make them pay for the painting of the signs, etc.. Get REAL people. Stop making excusess

unruly kids

Children now a days have no consequences for there actions! They have no respect for there parents, teachers or futher more law enforcement! When I was growing up it was yes mam and no mam! Its a luxury to here that these days. You have children who don't want to be in school so they disrupt everybody who does want to be there. But we cant kick them out or put them all in the same class, because that will "deny them an education". An education they don't want. But its o.k to deny all the other kids there education. Disipline should not be an option. My daddy's famous saying was there were to many children miss diagnosed with ADD. "If we had a problem with our attention he would find it for us". Great suggestion, corral all gang members we can and put them on mansonboro island and let them have at it. No food,no water! Lets see where brother hood will get you then. Let the best man win!

GANGS

WELL LETS SEE,TAKE PRAYER,THE PLEDGE,AND A$$ WHIPPINGS OUT OF SCHOOL AND THIS IS WHAT YOU GET A BUNCH OF PUNK A$$ KIDS TRYING TO BE HARDCORE AND ROB AND INTIMIDATE PEOPLE,I LIVE IN ROCKY POINT,AND MY FIRM BELIEF IS THAT ALL THEY NEED IS A FEW MORE BOOTS IN THEIR A$$,OR IF CAUGHT BREAKING INTO ANYONES HOME OR BUSINESS A FEW "00 BUCK"PELLETS SHOULD GET THEIR LITTLE PUNK A$$ES BACK INTO SHAPE,WHAT A BUNCH OF LOSERS,"WOW I'M HARD,I'M IN A GANG,I'M TOO WORTHLESS TO GET AN EDUCATION OR A JOB SO I'LL JUST STEAL AND VANDALIZE THE REST OF MY LIFE",PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK!!DEPORT THESE LOSERS OR SEND THEM TO A PRISON WORK FARM,NOT THREE HOTS AND A COT WITH FREE CABLE,AND A GYM.PENDER CO SHERIFF DO SOMETHING!!

GANGS in PC

HEEL FAN; I too live in RP and you couldn't have said it any better! I have nothing to add to that one!

little jerks

When some punk gets caught, can we spray paint everything he/she holds valuable? How about enact the '80s movie "Escape from New York"? Where we just fence in a large area and dump the waste of society in there. Let them fend for themselves without our help.

gangs in RP

Funny how this appeared right after that big text message hoax last week..... I am sure that little Johnny stole the spray paint out of dad's garage to vandalize the sign. Teenagers do this sort of thing to appear cool, painting gang signs and throwing them does not a gang make. I live in RP. This crap wont fly in our neighborhood. Want to get buckshot in your a$$?? Bring it.

How about not selling spray

How about not selling spray paint to kids, or teens. That is what they use for the gang markings and graffiti. Sounds crazy but here is another idea. Want to purchase it? Then before buying, register with your license just like you have to when you purchase certain sinus medications. For those who don't know it is used as a substance to make illegal street drugs. I do wonder, where are these parents. If they can't handle them then let the courts. Turn them over to someone who can. Please !

gangs

there is a simple solution to this problem. a little target practice along with a hell of a lot of body bags. lets make that trip back to their homeland a not so memorable one!

please

when the hell are people going the wake up. this crap is unbelievable. we need to start making examples of these kid(people) whatever they are and make this stuff stop. if anyone has any sense whatsoever, they would see what is going on in the bigger urban areas and put a stop to this now. before five or six more years go by and every day good people are scared to go anywhere. please

Weak punks join gangs, real

Weak punks join gangs, real men stand on their own and don't look to gangs like little girls for companionship

Primarily is the key word

"Surenos 13, a primarily Latino gang, and one of the fastest growing gangs" The original meaning of the term Surenos denotes an umbrella of gangs who fall under the control of the Mexican Mafia. The number ‘13’ represents the thirteenth letter of the alphabet, the letter ‘M’. This is used to pay homage to the Mexican Mafia. So let the screams of racism begin from our Mexican friends for even pointing out this fact.
