Some young Brunswick County girls are getting a head start learning about the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

The Brunswick Community College Fitness for Fun Girls Camp teaches eight to twelve year old girls the importance of fitness activities. This is the first year for the camp, which combines structured exercises with games like dodgeball and kickball. Instructors hope by getting kids involved at a young age they will continue to exercise throughout their life.

“Fitness these days is kind of low on the priority list for a lot of kids so we really wanted to bring them something that they could learn a lot and then also have a good time doing it,” said camp instructor Rhonda Schilawsky.

Great!

This is a great camp! Way to go BCC. Too many of our young kids are becoming dependant on TV and electronic games to keep them preoccupied. And the saddest part is that the parents are buying and supporting this. Kids are overweight and out of shape. What happened to going out Christmas morning after opening presents and everybody trying out their new bikes or skates or skateboards? (and if I really want to date myself... pogo sticks!) As I walk around town, thru stores, and at the beach I notice that today's youth is extremely overweight. 9 times out of 10 the kids are drinking a soda and eating something unhealthy. Parents, your kids are a direct result of your parenting. They don't know not to eat the sweet stuff. It's up to the parents to enforce and introduce kids to living a healthy lifestyle. For the parents that stuff their kids full of unhealthy foods and let them sit hours a day in front of a video game or TV, you are taking years off your children's lives. You are the reason that they're only going to live to 50 instead of 80. Stand up to your kids and when they want a candy bar hand them a stalk of celery with peanut butter on it, when they want candy hand them grapes. Fruit is naturally sweet and taste just like candy, why do you think they make fruit flavored candy? Walk with your kids around your neighborhood, go on a bike ride, take them to the park, put them in community sports. There's so much you can do to keep your kids healthy, and a healthy kid is a lot happier and does well in school compared to unhealthy kids. Who doesn't want the best for their kids?
