WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- There are many ways to celebrate the Christmas season...lots of them involving food and lights. But what about exercise and self-confidence? Hundreds of girls on the run took to the streets of downtown Wilmington for the 6th annual PPD Holiday 5K. Proceeds from the event are now in the hands of Girls On the Run. It's a non-profit that encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. For some, the race marks the end of the three-month curriculum centered on inner and outer strength.

“I just think it sums up everything with confidence and everything we've learned about and just giving our best. I just love the running. It makes me feel all pumped up and excited,” said runner and 6th grader Hannah Marable.

Hannah’s running buddy, her dad, was among the hundreds of community members to participate in the race as well. They both finished the race in just over 28 minutes.
