RALEIGH (AP) -- Gov. Mike Easley will announce what his office calls a major energy initiative at the Emerging Issues Forum in Raleigh. Easley's announcement Tuesday is in line with the theme of this year's forum, "North Carolina's Energy Futures: Realizing a State of Opportunity." The governor last August signed into law a bill to enact a Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard. It made North Carolina the first state in the Southeast to do so. The legislation addresses the need for safe, reliable and environmentally sound electricity in light of growing demand and higher energy prices. Also speaking at the forum Tuesday is Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
