Crystal blue sky and steady wind equal an ideal day to go fly a kite. Kite lovers could not have asked for a more perfect day for the Third Annual Kite Flying Festival. Founder Mike Agner said, "These are perfect conditions, after the first two years it didn't quite come out, but this is perfect, couldn't have asked for anything better." Debbie Zach drove down from Pennsylvania to fly her kites. "This year was just unbelievable, you know it's November 2nd and we are in short sleeves and look at what is in the air." That is just what stole the show. Larger than life kites, hovering in the sky, and of course all the people on he beach looking up in awe. "I like the colors and it's amazing," said 7-year-old Samantha Johnson. Ten-year-old Elizabeth Sweyer said, "Yea, I like the dog one over there." It was hard to pick a favorite. Debbie Zach said when you are in to flying kites, it is all about the season's hottest item. Her new favorite is the nearly 100-foot coddlefish kite, and agreed today was the perfect day to hoist it up. "So when you get perfect wind, to get large pieces up, you got to take advantage of it." For spectators, it looked like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade landed right here in Wrightsville Beach. Kite Flyer Dave Gomberg of Oregon said, "Everybody relates to flying kites as a kid, and that youthful joy, energy and enthusiasm. and a lot of people are trying to rekindle that they are just flying a little bit bigger kites than they did as a kid." No contest here, smiles for miles, and kites that took over the Wilmington sky.
