Easley calls special session on removing Wright from office

RALEIGH (AP) -- An attorney for Wilmington Rep. Thomas Wright is criticizing a special session of the House to consider removing the Democrat from office. Governor Mike Easley yesterday called the House into session March 20 to consider removing Wright for ethical misconduct. The House will consider the recommendations of a special committee that Wright be expelled. The committee also decided there was clear and convincing evidence that Wright mishandled about $340,000 in loans and campaign and charitable contributions. Wright has denied the allegations. His attorney, Irving Joyner, says the legislative session will make it harder for Wright to get a fair trial on the criminal charges. That's scheduled March 31. No lawmaker has been kicked out of the General Assembly in 128 years. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
