Medical relief efforts continue in Haiti after last month's earthquake. A young Haitian boy recovering from his injuries here in Wilmington has reason to celebrate.
Carlens Delfils turned 13 today. His birthday party had cake and presents, but the gifts he's received are much more important than anything he could unwrap.
Carlens came to the United States from Port Au Prince for medical treatment after his right hand was crushed saving his sister from falling rubble. For about three weeks, Carlens and his family have been staying with his doctor, Bill sutton.
"It's louder," Dr. Sutton said, "We're kind of a loud family to begin with. Still its a good family a very satisfying and full feeling."
"I like having another brother who is actually nice to me," Katy Sutton, Dr. Sutton's daughter, said.
Carlens says his hand is working just fine and Dr. Sutton says its healing nicely in a plastic brace with the colors of the Haitian flag. It helps to have mom around, who only got to the U.S. this week from a country that's still torn apart.
Maire Delfils says Haiti the situation in Haiti is "bad."
Carlens story is a near miracle. He escaped the rubble of Haiti to get treatment in Wilmington. It may have saved his right hand entirely.
His doctor says he'll make a full recovery but it's not his health he's wishing for as he blows out his candles.
"I wish to stay in america forever," Carlens said.
Carlens delfils is having a community birthday party this Sunday if you'd like to celebrate with him. It's from three to five at Thunder Alley on Magnolia Village Way in Leland.

HAITIE FAMILY DR SUTTON
BOY THE PERSON THAT MADE THE NASTY COMMMENT about Dr sutton helping the hati family should be sent to haiti where they cant have any food or water and see their families dieing in front of them how selfish can any american be not to be happy for this family we have never had to live in conditions like that DR sutton i thank god there are people like you and your family may you be bless you gave these poor people an experience they truley appreciate unlike some americans Debra jean ward
Congrats Carlens
Your 15 minutes are up. Back to Haiti. There are families in Wilmington that could not get this assistance if they tried. Why we have to go rushing in and bring all the wounded to Wilmington and the US is beyond me. What's wrong with Canada or Europe taking charge sometimes? The next time someone is injured, I hope Dr. Sutton has room at his place for them and thier family.
Your selfishness is incredible....
...and it displays a bitterness deep within you. Sometimes in this world, we all have to come together for the common good of man, especially in the case of children. This has been a disasterous event for the poor people of Haiti.
I don't understand how you could possibly be so negative about a good thing.
I hope you don't own any animals.
????
Apparently, you have never met Dr. Sutton. He is a very giving and compassionate man.
Maybe you didn't get the help you needed at some point but that doesn't mean you need to bash those that are helping.
You sound like you want someone to help you out of whatever you are going through...well when a earthquake takes down your home/town/country and kills a large portion of your aquaintances and then a WHOLE lot more...maybe thne someeone will help.
It seems like a lot to "wish" for just for a little help.
Here's an idea...start by doing all that you can for yourself in a country where we have some many opportunities. I bet you get A LOT further than Carlens would had he not gotten help.
!
Well said! Dr. Sutton is a very awesome surgeon and an even better person. He does this sort of thing out of the kindness of his heart.
He has helped my family out a lot in the past few years and is there whenever we need medical attention.
