Hard Rock Park sellers having hard luck finding buyer

READ MORE:

The owners of Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach haven't had any luck finding a buyer after filing for bankruptcy. They've asked a federal bankruptcy judge for permission to liquidate their assets. Attorneys for the park's owners want to convert their chapter eleven filing to chapter seven, which would allow the company to sell its assets through a trustee and use the funds to pay their creditors.

Sell it

......to Wilmington city council, it'll make money here! After all this is the only spot in the nation where a convention center is going to be successful so it follows that a worn out theme park will flourish here as well!

An idiotic comment

From obviously an ignorant idiot....

Yes, yours is idiotic

Yes, your comment is idiotic Straight Shooter. Convention centers do not make money, the citizens of Wilmington voted NO but the city council forced it upon us anyway. To purchase the park would be the next logical step for an illogical council to make.

You, like many, are wrong because you don't know the facts

The City Council and County Commissioners along with most business owners, and others that are informed, approved the Convention Center because they know all the facts. They know how Convention Centers have been an asset to other cities and how it will benefit our area. They are aware of the many request buy business and other organizations to hold their meetings here but can't because of our inadequate facilities. They know the possible small cost to subsidize the center's operating cost to be an investment to a much larger pay-back for our area. A small to medium 2-4 day convention will typically spend from $400,000 and up in an area. Get the real facts!! New Bern, NC opened their facility a few years ago and it's been credited a big success for their area. Keep in mind that New Bern is a fraction of our size and 30 miles fron a beach. Raleigh, NC just opened their second larger Convention Center recently with pride and excitement. Now if you think these facilities did nothing but loose money why would they do it twice. It's no wonder that organizations would like to have their conventions here with our year round golf, great beaches and our historic riverside downtown with unique shops. And soon, with the new Convention Center and three new hotels, we will have great facilities.

My father works for a

My father works for a professional stitching business (Hirsch Intl) and he goes to trade shows ALL THE TIME at many convention centers around the country. He has found out after doing lots of digging that most convention centers LOSE money...one of the few to actually make money is Orlando. These small centers are not as successful as you may think.

Don't think so

As best as I recall, it was voted down but the city council went ahead with it anyway. The one in Raleigh has been losing money since it opened and the new one was forced on them as well. Why did they do it twice?? Because they can! Because they think "This time it will work." They want to leave their mark. Doesn't matter, the fact that they lose money year after year is what matters and we will be left holding the tab.

You still don't get it

It's not the possible short fall in the center's operating cost that should be focused on, it's the overall impact and dollars it will bring to the area. In fact our center is aready the catalyst to the Northern Downtown Renewal area. New Bern's facility was the catalyst in their downtown renewal and has actually made money. I lived in Raleigh when they built their first center and heard the same concerns you make. Later, after it was shown to be a success, they complained why was it not made larger. A larger facility was later built. Get the real impact information on their centers from these towns and others, our area leaders have, maybe then it will make sense to you.
