Healthy, low-fat diet helps fight colon cancer

Previous research has found connections between a meat- and fat-heavy western diet and heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer. Now, it's been linked to colon cancer. A new study reveals a healthy low-fat diet can make a difference even after you've been diagnosed. Studies show that keeping fit, watching your weight, and eating a lot of fruits and vegetables are important in reducing your risk for colon cancer. New research finds that healthy foods may also help fight off colon cancer in patients who have the disease. Doctors followed 1,000 people with colon cancer for around five years. They asked patients what kinds of foods they ate and how often they consumed high fat foods such as red meat and ice cream. People who had the most western style diet -- including high meat content, high fat and frequent desserts - were more than three times as likely to have their cancer return and twice as likely to die as people who ate a low fat diet with fruits and vegetables. Further analysis revealed that it didn't matter whether the patients were thin, physically active, and received the best treatment. Those who ate the western diet were still at a disadvantage. Experts advise all cancer patients to follow a low-fat, high-vegetable diet to maximize their chances of beating the disease.
