Heavy turnout expected in primaries

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- The person in charge of running the election in Indiana's most populous county is expecting "a heavy voting day" -- and her office is ready. Marion County Clerk Beth White says many voters were already in line when polls opened this morning. Voters in Indiana and North Carolina are crowding polling places as they settle the largest remaining contests in the Democratic presidential nomination struggle between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Gary Bartlett with the North Carolina Board of Elections says he can't remember a primary this exciting, adding that "it's truly fun to be part of making history." Nearly half a million people had already cast early and absentee ballots in North Carolina as of yesterday -- more than half the total number of voters who cast a ballot during the 2004 primary.
