Hockey Weekend Across America hits ice Friday

Hockey Weekend Across America cranks up this weekend. This is the third year for the event, but the first year Wilmington will participate.

The Wilmington Ice House and the Coastal Carolina Hockey Association will be teaming up to celebrate the local hockey scene. School-aged hockey players are encouraged to wear hockey jerseys to school Friday. Saturday will be "Try Hockey for Free Day" starting at 11:45 a.m.

"We've had 30 kids sign up," Wilmington Ice House Director Bryan Hapeman said. "After that we have a public skate from 1 to 3:30. Then we have honor your local hockey hero. And at 4:00 we have some fast paced action hockey with our 14 and under Bantam Clippers travel team."

One-hundred-thirty rinks across the nation are taking part in Hockey Weekend Across America.
