HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- A building that's become a symbol of summer in Holden Beach is closed after concerns about its safety. The Jordan Boulevard Pavilion is closed until further notice after engineers discovered its pylons were leaning.
Built in 2008 the building is leaning to the northeast, essentially being blown by the prevailing wind. A structural engineer found the structure to be "woefully inadequate," leaving the town no choice but to shut it down until it's fixed.
"What we're anticipating is that we'll temporarily fix it, and then in the off season, after Labor Day, we'll do the full-time repair on it," Town Manager David Hewett said.
The temporary fix will start Monday and is expected to be completed within a week. It's expected to cost taxpayers $5-6,000.
The town still plans to hold its Coastal Concert Series throughout the summer at the pavilion. Plans and costs for a permanent fix are not yet finalized.
