NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Fire Services personnel responded to a residential structure fire on Figure Eight Island Sunday evening.
A security guard notified 911 that a residence at 3 Skimmer road was on fire. Firefighters from New Hanover County Station 62 arrived and found heavy smoke and flames visible from a three story residence. Additional personnel were dispatched from New Hanover stations 61, 41, 51, and 52, as we’ll as Hampstead, Sloop Point, Wrightsville Beach, and the City of Wilmington Fire Departments.
It took several hours for fire personnel to fully extinguish the fire and two firefighters where treated for heat exhausted. The majority of the fire was in the walls and ceiling making it difficult to locate and douse.
Personnel from the New Hanover County Fire Marshal where requested to respond to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. They indicated that the fire appears accidental, but the investigation continues. Estimated damage to the structure is projected at over 1 million dollars.
