Hundreds of people came out to Wrightsville Beach on Saturday for a peaceful protest of offshore oil drilling.

It’s called Hands Across the Sand. Protesters formed a line and joined hands with everyone for fifteen minutes beginning at noon.

Those in attendance say they hope their message is heard both in Raleigh and in Washington.

“We're all going to call and write our senators and try and change the voice of the American people because it needs to change,” said protester Jim Sullivan. “We need to understand that we don't need offshore oil drilling.”

In addition to the event at Wrightsville Beach, there were about 750 gatherings like this across America drawing thousands of people to beaches coast to coast.

Idiots Holding Hands

We don't need to drill for oil anymore? Well that's fantastic! I guess tomorrow I'll fill up my gas tank with unicorn tears. Maybe some of these scholars can hold hands around my car and get it to chank. You guys are idiots.

Interesting...I've heard it

Interesting...I've heard it mentioned that all the offshore drilling in the deepwater was because environmentalists such as these protested the close in drilling that was in 100 or 200 feet, where the oil companies would have been able to stop the flow. The oil companies have been forced to move off shore and have no way of stopping oil leaks in deep water. Sooo... maybe you could infer from this that our gulf issues are indirectly caused by ENVRIONMENTALISTS!!!!

Hands at the beach

"In addition to the event at Wrightsville Beach, there were about 750 gatherings like this across America drawing thousands of people to beaches coast to coast".

As many pointed out in post's, driving to the event, plastic bottles etc, cause consumption of oil based products.

While all would probably agree, if there was an alternative that would eliminate this consumption all would embrace it.

But until there is a economical and effective alternative we are faced with a serious problem.

Do we continue buying this from countries that are praying for our destruction, or do we create jobs, and obtain energy independence, and improve quality of life and lower energy prices by production at home?

Accidents happen, but do we throw out the baby with the bath water?

This spill has opened our eyes and demonstrated the need for better design and technology to safely produce the life blood of our economy.

While thousands MAY have attended this event nationally, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS are trying to find employment and economical fuel prices.

So, until there is a breakthrough in technology, meaningless "days at the beach" continue to be an empty and meaningless protests.

Without fuel, "hands across the unemployment line" will be the story of the day.

Ah yes I know it well!

The collective minds of the misinformed. All they know is BP is bad and they're killing pelicans, so they don't want anymore pelicans to die. I wish my brain synapse worked like that. The less you know..............

The oil spill is bad, I am

The oil spill is bad, I am not questioning that. However, one point has been proven. With the hundreds of thousands or millions of barrels of oil that has come out of this one well, it shows we have plenty of crude to satisfy the needs of this country without being ripped off by having to import any petroleum. We should keep drilling, just learn from this and try and keep it from happening again.

How did all these hand

How did all these hand holders get to Wrightsville beach? On their skateboards and bikes? Yeah right! I'm sure there were quite a few SUVs BMWs Mercedes and other such gas guzzlers taking up prime parking spaces!! Give me a freaking break!! These will be the same people who'll run over each other to get to the gas station when the oil shortage kicks in and the lines are forming down at the neighborhood BP!!

wonder how much gas all

wonder how much gas all these hippies spent driving out to the beach.... great use of 15 minutes, at least the city could collect some revenue from the parking meters for this idiocracy

Actually we provided park

Actually we provided park and ride bus transportation so that so many people would not have to be on the beach looking for parking. Shuttles were available at the Galleria Shopping Center.

So...the shuttle buses....

Did they run on battery power?

Please don't tell me that they ran on diesel, gasoline, natural gas, or some other nasty hydrocarbon that required drilling.

Dumb Asses

And I'm sure most of your drove to the event.

The Deep Water Horizon

The Deep Water Horizon incident is a fluke and a terrible disaster that claimed 11 lives. Hopefully they will be able to stop the leak soon. BP has claimed responsibility and say they will clean it up, its a start in the right direction. Hopefully we learn from this and correct the problems that happened to make the industry safer.

Lets not loose sight of the fact that without oil from deep water drilling in the US the price of gas will sky rocket to close to $20 a gallon. Maybe that is what Obama wants? Look around and you will see everything contains petroleum in one degree or another.

Just Wondering..

Just wondering..Did you guys drive there?
Maybe drank water from a plastic bottle?
How about maybe took pictures, or talked on your phone?

Did anyone wear flip-flops, or a synthetic bathing suit, or sunglasses??

Wondering where all that stuff came from..
