The FDA is recalling a popular diet supplement. Hydroxycut is believed to have caused liver damage, seizures in more than twenty people, and may even be to blame for one person's death.
Area pharmacies are pulling it off the shelves. Now believed to cause serious liver damage, the FDA said Hydroxycut has to go.
"What it's supposed to do is decrease appetite, and increase your metabolism. That's what it is advertised to do,” explained nutritionist Heidi Kaufman.
According to the FDA, adverse affects of this product are rare, but do exist. So far Hydroxycut has been linked to serious illness in 23 people and one death.
Supplements are considered food, which is why they aren't regulated by the federal government like prescription drugs.
"The supplements that we have come from the same purpose, from food. The whole point of supplementation is that you may not get enough leafy greens, so you'll take calcium,” said Renee Montague.
Renee Montague is the wellness director at Tidal Creek natural food store. The weight loss supplements she sells are plant and herb based. She said side effects only come from supplements with chemicals in them. "Hudia, which curbs the appetite naturally, often drank as a tea, we have that in a tea form too. So it feels like a food, you are having tea, and curbing your appetite."
Hydroxycut is advertised as the most powerful fat burner ever, but according to nutritionists, if it looks too good to be true on the bottle, it probably is.

What about aspirin and other OTC?
Re: What about aspirin and other OTC?
"A well-written story, however you should be asking the question: why aren't more harmful products being pulled from shelves?"
Absolutely right. Right now there is a massive recall underway for: Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Rolaids, St. Joseph aspirin, Simply Sleep.
The FDA knew about these tainted products as far back as 2008. WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG TO PULL THESE PRODUCTS???
Johnson & Johnson is also being prosecuted for paying tens of millions of dollars in kickbacks so nursing homes would put more patients on its blockbuster schizophrenia drug. HOW SICK IS THAT????
The government's complaint states that J&J gave special rebates to Omnicare Inc., the country's biggest dispenser of prescription drugs to nursing homes, in return for recommendations from its pharmacists that patients be given Risperdal, in many cases when it was inappropriate.
The FDA and BigPharma are NOT protecting YOUR health. They are working together to put the vitamin industry out of business so consumers will no longer have a choice.
Johnson & Johnson issues massive recall of Tylenol

NEW YORK – Johnson & Johnson issued a massive recall Friday of over-the-counter drugs including Tylenol, Motrin and St. Joseph's aspirin because of a moldy smell that has made people sick.
It was the second such recall in less than a month because of the smell, which regulators said was first reported to McNeil in 2008. Federal regulators criticized the company, saying it didn't respond to the complaints quickly enough, wasn't thorough in how it handled the problem and didn't inform the Food and Drug Administration quickly.
