Fire departments from as far away as Sampson County met in Southport on Saturday for the annual firefighter's competition. It was a chance to meet, greet and compete. They put their lives on the line to protect us, but what makes these men and women even more special is that they volunteer to do it without pay. ”I just love it. The adrenaline rush, being able to help other people who need it,” said Joshua Hale of the Winnabow Fire Department. Volunteer firefighters from all across southeastern North Carolina came to Southport and teams competed in five events. “It's a fun competition but, it also gives them the chance to practice on their skills that we use on a daily routine in the fire service,” said Capt. Todd Corring of the Southport Fire Department. The events included the bucket brigade, where teams went back in time to put out a false fire with buckets of water, the sprinkler plug, and the competitive barrel push. All teams worked hard and put their skills on display, but there could only be one winner. Something all the fire departments wanted. “I like to win. Don't get me wrong, it's good to come here and have fun, but it's good to come back home with something, something to show everybody, something to be proud of,” said Anthony Godwin of the Old Dock Fire Department. At the end of the competition, third place went to the Supply Fire Department, Taylor’s Bridge came in second, and the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Department in Columbus County came in first.

Firefighter Competition

My wife and I attended this event as vendors. We drove 3 hours to see be at the competition and had wonderful time. It was hot, the Fire Department setup and sprinkler for the kids to cool down. I may have been spotted running through the water a time or two myself. This event impressed me and I hope to be able to come back next year.
