WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- People who own one will rarely talk bad about it, but the new version of the iPhone is getting a lot of flak from users across the country and even Consumer Reports. But it looks like that broad criticism of Apple's iPhone 4 is not spoiling the whole bunch in Wilmington.
It's been ridiculed since its release last month, and that ridicule has turned into strenuous testing by Consumer Reports, which is now giving the iPhone 4 a thumbs down. The biggest problem the magazine found was low reception when someone covers the lower part of the phone.
"I haven't noticed any problems," Alex Lane of Wilmington said. "No dropped calls, but obviously I can't talk for anyone else."
Lane is a mortgage banker and relies on his iPhone 4 to keep him and his career going. But while many are talking smack about the new iPhone, this Wilmington user is problem free.
"I use it all the time," he said.
For anyone having signal problems Apple says there's an easy fix: a bumper case that should prevent signal loss. Local users say with or without it the iPhone 4 has held up well.
"When I first got my iPhone, I, of course, set it up and everything, then afterward I literally took both hands and completely covered the phone. I was unable to get it to drop any bars whatsoever," Shawn Spivey of Wilmington said. "I haven't had the first dropped call."
Besides talking to these iPhone users we also called AT&T, which sells and provides service for the phone. We asked a sales associate if customers in the Wilmington area have been having problems with the iPhone 4. The associate said "not really," but then added that if a new customer were to run into a problem they have 30 days to cancel their contract. So for shoppers the final decision is up to them to see if the iPhone 4 a good buy or a rotten apple.
Consumer Reports is urging shoppers not to buy the phone. The recent recommendation has even created some suspicion among the online community of a possible recall of the iPhone 4.
