Britt’s Donuts opened for the season Friday afternoon at Carolina Beach. The opening is a sweet sign of spring along the Cape Fear Coast. They’ve been at it since 1939 and the folks who run Britt’s have a tightly guarded secret. It’s their recipe. Why tinker with a product that’s been recognized as one of the nation’s top donuts. Eunice Holt moved to Carolina Beach just after Britt’s closed for the season last year. "We moved down here October 1st. We came down here to retire. We come to Britt's and they're closed, and I've been waiting the whole time for them to open, thank god they're open now.”
Holt says the wait was well worth it and she’s not alone. It seems like everybody enjoys Britt’s regardless of age or where they live, even if it’s 10,000 miles away. Australian resident Steve Pearson enjoyed donuts at Britt’s on Friday. " They're the best donuts in the world. I used to eat them when I was here many years ago."
Opening day for Britt’s is normally busy. This year it was exceptionally busy. Bubba Atkinson has been eating at Britt’s since 1959. He was there again on Friday.
" I've been coming since I was 5 years old. Seriously? Absolutely. Hasn't changed much has it? Oh yes it has. Back then they were a nickel each and 50 cents a dozen." Britt’s owner Bobby Nivens said Bubba is right. "They were a nickel apiece back then, but at the same time Mr. Britt was paying me 40 cents an hour too, so there's a lot of difference." The current price for a dozen donuts is $6.25
