Judge at Lovette hearing calls for legislative session on gangs

DURHAM (AP) -- The judge presiding at a hearing for a teenager charged with killing two North Carolina college students has pleaded with Gov. Mike Easley to call a special Legislative session on gang violence. District Court Judge Craig Brown said Friday that 17-year-old Laurence Lovette will get a fair trial. But Brown said from the bench at Lovette's first court appearance that, "I'm sending an SOS to Raleigh. I expect them to hear it." Brown ordered Lovette held on a $3 million bond. He is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Duke University graduate student Abhijit Mahato (Ab-ah-SHEET muh-HA-toe) and University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson. Police also have charged 21-year-old Demario Atwater in Carson'sdeath, and 19-year-old Stephen Lavance Oates in Mahato's death. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

gang influence on youth is frightening

I agree, Wilmington has a serious gang problem that is only getting worse. I know several teenagers who just a year ago had absolutely no earthly interest in gang culture and are now captivated by it. It isnt just a problem for black teens, these are middle class white kids getting wrapped up in this stuff. They are obsessed with rap music and every two seconds they like to practice all these gang hand signs and talk about gang related things...its terribly scary how these kids who less than a year ago were only interested in rock music, skateboarding and fishing are now talking Bloods and gang violence and people threatening to kill other people because of gang related stuff. Someone has to do something now.

Gangs

You're absolutely right, gangs are here and are very serious. They are consuming more of our kids each day and something needs to be done. There is a Gang unit that is supposed to be working to help our community with this problem. Instead they are decieving our citizens to make it LOOK like they are doing something for these kids, to ensure they have a job, when in fact they are simply not being held accountable because they are housed by the Sheriff's office. As I attempted to post the other night (but for some reason after being reviewed by whomever, it was NOT posted), the good ole boy, hush hush system is NOT a thing of the past as it should be. I speak from recent,personal experience. There is an unbelievable amount of deception, lies and unethical actions going on in our Sheriff's Office currently and somebody needs to step up and hold these people accountable. Until that point, when the community knows the TRUTH about what's going on and can come together to face this problem, our kids are at risk.... a very real, VERY DANGEROUS risk.
