This week's lowest score belongs to Spiro's Breakfast and Lunch House on Greenfield Street in Wilmington. Five points off for sausage, liver pudding, potatoes and eggs at the wrong temperature. Five more for raw meat stored beside and above cooked food. More points off for chemicals stored beside food. And employees need to wash hands when changing job tasks. Twelve violations in all for score of 72.5 for Spiro's. It's been a tough month for China Garden in Sunset Beach. On August 7 an inspector gave it a score of 80.5. Two weeks later they got a lower score. Five points off for foods at the wrong temperature. Five more for the dishwasher not sanitizing properly. Three more because containers holding utensils need cleaning. A 76.5 for China Garden in Sunset Beach. The Chili's in Shallotte needs to replace damaged lids, containers and worn cutting boards. The prep cooler also needs to be fixed to hold at or below 45-degrees. And there were fruit flies around moldy onions in the dry storage room. A dozen violations earn Chili's in Shallotte an 80.5. To Wilmington and K-38 Baja Grill. The walk-in cooler was too warm, as was some of the food in it. Skillets, pans and the food processor were stored dirt. Glasses and pots were stored wet. And an ice bin and beverage nozzle need cleaning. And there were flies in the kitchen storage area. K-38 scores 81.5. Back to Shallotte and the Waffle House on Whitville Road. Five points off because food needs to be stored in order of final cooking temperatures. Five more because the dishwasher wasn't reaching or holding the right temperature. It was later fixed. A couple more violations for cleaning issues earns an 87 for Waffle House in Shallotte. Some regrades starting at Great Wall in Supply. Last month an inspector gave it a score of 78.5. This time around there were noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef and pork at the wrong temperature. Still, an improvement to 95. The cooler temperature problem has since been fixed. Tomo Japanese in Ocean Isle scored an 86 last month. Despite some flies and some cleaning issues... an upgrade to 95. Handee Hugo's on Ocean Highway in Winnabow earned an 84 last month. The fly problem is better. 95.5 this time. Village Market and Deli at 5001 O'Quinn Blvd. in Oak Island leads the way with a perfect 100 plus two points for workers passing a food safety course. S&L New York Deli on S. 17th Street in Wilmington lost half a point for ceiling tiles that need repair. Add back the two-point bonus for a total of 101.5. A Southern Thyme on Fountain Drive in Wilmington needs to remove stained ceiling tiles. But still a perfect 100.
