Kitchen Cops 11/29/07

READ MORE:
A local restaurant gets a second chance with health inspectors in this week's Kitchen Cops Report. Back in September, Betty's Waterfront Restaurant in Supply scored an 80. It took a couple months, but last week an inspector returned. No more mouse droppings or roaches, but there's still some cleaning to do. There was also old milk in the cooler and bait fish in the freezer. Still a big improvement to 94. Five local restaurants have fresh high scores from health inspectors. Chelsea's at one South Front Street in Downtown Wilmington continues its clean streak with a perfect score of 100. Add in two points for workers passing a food safety course. The same top score of 102 for the Subway on Ocean Highway in Calabash. Henry's on Independence Blvd. in Wilmington lost a half point because floors need cleaning especially in the front wait area. But a two-point bonus boosts the score to 101.5. The floor under the ice machine needs re-sealing at Crow Creek Snack Bar on Hickman Road in Calabash. But still a perfect 100. And an inspector says A Southern Thyme on Fountain Drive in Wilmington "Looks Great!!" A perfect 100 there as well.

Wal-Mart Southport

Six weeks ago, while shopping at Wal-Mart in Southport, I noticed web worms in the brown rice[Comet brand]. I spoke with assistant manager, Scott and was assured it would be removed from the shelves. I returned the following Thursday to shop. The web worms were now also in the other brands. Each week {six times] I spoke with managers, employees and was assured the problem would be taken care of. The problem has not been dealt with. I have given up. I now shop for rice elsewhere.

I worked at walmart in Wilmington, News Center one. We had ants penetrating the walls underneath the grocery racks where the stock is stored. They were coming in for the flour, cake mixes etc. that were stored on the lower shelves at knee hight. There were ants all in the food so we went through them and disposed of what we could see. My boss got RAID ant spray and went to town with it. Yes, folks all over and around where the stock is kept a toxic poison ant spray. I questioned his action and he knew that we were suppose to call in an exterminator to use food safe methods. Do you think he cared? The web worms are probably coming from the bags underneath the NEW ones on top. They do NOT rotate stock. The bottom ones are probably ancient.
