Kitchen Cops 2/21/08

READ MORE:
Health inspectors rated one local restaurant a low performer this week while another narrowly missed landing on the list for a second week in a row. Last time out Roly Poly on Shipyard Boulevard in Wilmington scored a 77.5. This time it had a different set of problems. They included pasta salad that expired in early December and the owner/manager opening a container of sandwiches with a dirty towel that touched the sandwiches. Seven violations this time and a new score of 88. That's a half-point above our low performer threshold. Bricklanding Plantation Club in Ocean Isle Beach was not so lucky. The dishwasher needs to be fixed. The staff needs to cool cooked foods rapidly when storing. And everyone needs to wear effective hair restraints. An 87.5 for Bricklanding Plantation Club. Three local eateries top this week's Kitchen Cops high performers list. Pita Delite at 317 South College Road in Wilmington scored a perfect 100 plus a two-point bonus for workers passing a food safety course and a total score of 102. Harris Teeter just down College Road lost half a point for some repairs and cleaning needed. Add in the two-point bonus for a total score of 101.5. And finally to Brunswick County and a perfect 100 for Mankin's Causeway Café on Holden Beach road near Supply.

Hey Everyone, S&L Deli on So.17th Street Got a 102 score on 2/19/08. Lou and Tammy Congratulations. Maybe I should warn all RED SOX FANS to prepare themselves before entering...These are BIG!!! Yankee fans...Can't have everything, Can't win the world series, you might as well be a HIGH SCORER in your food grade. ;) Linda

Roly Poly

Shut them down. Get them where it hurts. Totally uncalled for with few month old pasta salad. It's so sad these days. We trust restraunts to have good & healthy food and we can't depend on them. I am so glad that WWAY 3 does these stories. Show's the true side of a restraunt that it's customers can't see.

Roly Poly Sanitation Score

The Health Dept. can only shut down a restaurant that scores below a 75. I used to manage the RP downtown (until it closed), and then was an assistant manager at the Shipyard location for nearly a year. While I was employed there we never got below a 96 on the sanitation score. I know the owner of RP is a different one then when I was employed there, and he may just not be familiar with what the health code is in NC. One thing that helps restaurants now is a certification called ServSafe. Not only can they learn what is covered but they also get an extra 2 points added to their final score for having the certification (hence the occasional 102 score you might see). I recently went by there and was disgusted to see the 77.5 score they had. I wondered what had changed so much in the last 2 years since I worked there. And now to see that the re-score is an 88 is equally disgusting. I personally believe that all restaurants should be required to post the last 3 sanitation scores they have received. I won't eat anywhere below a 96 (with or without ServSafe).

I agree to this

Post at least the last three scores! Maybe more. People have a right to know what they are spending their money for and the gamble that they are taking. Fines, penalties and slaps on the wrists are not going to change things but something like some visible embarrassment surely will do the trick. If your business depends on the image that you portray to the consumer that will come and spend money in your establishment, you ought to be open to ridicule and less business for doing a poor job at things! And yes, we need twice the inspectors and reward them for finding problems. Now the inspectors are announced and a business that flunks really is a shame when they know they are going to be inspected. So their score might really be an everyday 30-40...
