Kure Beach must remove sandbags

KURE BEACH -- Sandbags that have protected the riggings condominiums in kure beach for more than 20 years must be removed. The Coastal Resources Commission came to a unanimous decision at a hearing this morning. This isn't the first time the c-r-c has told condo owners to remove the bags...they asked for their removal more than a year ago. The Riggings' attorney says they plan to appeal today's decision while they pursue a permanent fix for the threat of beach erosion. New Hanover County superior court will handle the appeal.

Kure Beach sandbags

I've lived at Carolina Beach for the majority of 40yrs. When The Riggings were introduced as a project to the council many people and experts advised against it for this very reason but as you know the council approved and the project happened anyway. I believe the owners of The Riggings need to except the fact that they were advised against this type of development because the ocean doesn't discriminate and that's the risk you take living on the ocean front. They were offered a federal grant that includes our hard earned tax dollars to move their homes out of harms way but denied that offer. Whether they spend their own money to build a wall that will eliminate their shore or spend up to millions of their own money over the next many years on beach renourishment then this property and all ocean front properties will always face this issue. The scientific community around the world is screaming at our leaders & officials to be smarter about our decisions that concern the environment. I believe it's time to change the way we develop and prepare for 20-30yrs in the future since The Riggings did not. Wake up public officials, step out of the box and prepare for our children's & grandchildren's future.

Kure Beach Sandbags

Granted the sand bags at the Riggins were suppose to be a temporary fix - but what's the difference in those sand bags and the wall of rocks protecting the north end of Carolina Beach?

Rigging Sandbags

When I returned to Wilmington in the early Nineties, I dated a woman who lived at the Riggings. The CRC had told them to remove the sandbags then, almost fifteen years ago! The CRC obviously has as much enforcement authority as PeeWee Herman.

PeeWee Herman. LOL One day the whole coast of barrier islands will be under water. No amount of sand bags will stop it.
