A Brunswick County man was treated at the hospital Tuesday after being bitten by a law enforcement dog. Leland Police stopped a vehicle on Highway 74-76 and found several packets of heroin and a .40-caliber semi automatic handgun in the car. Police called the Brunswick County K-9 Unit to assist them. They arrested suspect Vincent Hill. While searching the vehicle, the deputy accidentally hit the remote control to release the dog from his car. The dog bit the suspect, leaving abrasions and bite wounds on Hill's lower abdomen. "The dog got loose somehow, and started attacking one of them, while he was on the car, getting handcuffed, getting bit," said witness Lamar Claiborne. Hill was treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and released. He is being held at the Brunswick County Jail, awaiting his first appearance.

Good dog!

They should adopt an SOP that allows the dog to be let loose on ALL these maggots!

People, quit the crap talk,

People, quit the crap talk, give the dog a steak and send the heroin toting suspect to prison.

Jeez!

It was an accident that happened during a felony arrest for weapons and heroin! Except for the chance that this guy might get a free pass, I think it's funny... I hope the officers took their sweet time pulling the dog off him. I know if I come across this thug in my neighborhood, he won't get off so easy. Anybody that disagrees should go post his bail and take him in. Maybe you can turn him around with your liberal ideas... lol.

Leave the Pooch alone.

This pooch might have percieved a threat as you know their are trained to recognize a threat even if humans don't see it. Give him a bone or even better a steak and the drug dealer a a cell and a long sentence and call it a day. I hope this GOOD dog dosen't catch something for biting rotten flesh. Scooby dooby do.

Where is your Heart

Why so negative. Yes the guy was wrong for the drugs, The officer made a mistake, and hit the button. We all make mistakes, or have made some in our life time. Do you have Children? We all raise our children, in a way we want them to go, We don't know what they do behind our backs. Thats really rude to call something that does't belong to you, (WE ALL BELONG TO GOD) a piece of rotten flesh).

We should just call him a

We should just call him a THUG...

NO

I, don't think we should call him anything. That's judging someone. There is only one JUDGE. I, heard someone say we, don't have THUGS,around here. A true THUG, don't play, there would be more violence, than anything. I, think what alot of people need to do is mind their own business. There is a song that says you need to take 6 months, to mind your own bussiness, and 6 months to leave other people, business alone, in other words SWEEP AROUND YOUR OWN FRONT DOOR, BEFORE YOU SWEEP AROUND SOMEONE ELSE. TAKE A LOOK AT YOURSELF, YOU'LL FIND SOME FAULTS TOO. PUT LOVE IN YOUR HEART, WHERE THERE IS HATE. ALSO WHEN YOU POINT ONE FINGER AT SOMEONE YOU HAVE 3 COMING POINTING AT YOURSELF.

I don't need your religious

I don't need your religious beliefs....People look all around me and will find nothing that compares to what these "THUGS" do. Are you saying I shouldn't have something negative to say to those two males that killed the UNC Presiden? PLEASE. I call it how I see it...and this guy IS a THUG

A dog that would react like

A dog that would react like that would be too much a liability. Suppose it had been an accident scene and the officer was talking to a wrecker operator or EMT or accident victim. Then the dog gets loose and the other person is startled or raises his arm, or back away suddenly or reaches for his/her ID.....this dog will attack??? He shouldn't. If he would, he needs more training. This would not be acceptable for a dog that can do this kind of damage to be allowed to make choices on his own. This is what handlers are for.

Did the dog do right?

I am a Canine handler and most of the time, the canine is trained that when the door "pops" open the canine is to go to the handler's side unless the handler is; fight, chasing, or some other active the canine WILL attack. This is how the down is been trained. Its has been said that the dog was not giving a verbal command, however canines are trained on non-verbal commands, as in a hand command, and the door popper. so yes the canine did right. THE DOG DID NOT THING WRONG. Now the handler well he should move the door poper button so that he does not hit anymore. "I would Know" ubi dubium ibi libertas Translation "where [there is] doubt, there [is] freedom"

Yes, if the dogs handler was

Yes, if the dogs handler was talking to an EMS worker and that person raised their hands in what the dog perceived as an aggressive manner, that dog will attack them. Same goes if the other person is a fellow LEO. It makes sense to train a dog to attack like that. Let's say the officer gets in a fight with a suspect and the suspect knocks out the officer and continues to beat on him...should that dog not respond and attact because the officer didn't give him an order to? Of course not.

I really don't buy that a

I really don't buy that a trained dog will just attack anybody if that person makes a movement. There would be a lot more police dog attacks if the dogs were allowed to use his own discretion when to go after a suspect. I am pretty sure that they act on command. I assume if a scuffle started between a suspect and an officer, the dog might intervene, but not this time.

I'm not saying a dog will

I'm not saying a dog will attack if you make a movement...but if the owner is in the process of detaining someone and that person makes a sudden jerk or any movement the dog perceives as aggressive, he will attack to protect his owner

NOT TRUE

This story is not true. WWAY does not have a true and accurate account of what happened. No, I am not a police officer. I know what happened, parts of the story are so wrong.

This will not be so funny

This will not be so funny when a lawsuit is filed against the BCSD and the Bozo that hit the wrong button. From what I have read, the suspect was being arrested and not resisting and fully cooperating with the officers. Anytime a person is in custody of any law officer, that officer(s) is fully responsible for the safety and well-being of the detainee. He definitely deserves compesation even if he did break the law. However, even if the dog did get loose, why did he attack anyone without being given the command to do so? Suppose he had gotten loose in a mall parking lot or school yard, what would he have done? Maybe the dog needs further training. Sounds like we might not be getting the whole story here.

These dogs are trained to

These dogs are trained to protect their owner...if the owner was in the process of cuffing the suspect, the dog easily could have taken any movement by the suspect as a threat against his owner and attacked. The dog did exactly how he was trained to do...exactly how all LEO dogs are trained

are you serious

i think the dog should be prosecuted and put on trial. the dog is an officer to and it should face charges for attackingb a hand cuffed man. mabye it should be relieved

You are kidding!..RIGHT!!

You are kidding!..RIGHT!! How is this the dogs fault...he is doing what he was trained to do! This was just an isolated incidence! No need to put a dog on trial..I mean really..what would the dog say?

WAY TO GO DOG!.....you

WAY TO GO DOG!.....you should get an award!

response to dog bite

I was a k-9 handler and trainer in New Jersey. I am sorry to say that that dog bite will cost that agency and only benefit the person apprehended. A trained k-9 is to handled in the same way as a firearm. the guy that was bitten is going to get paid big time. It goes back to the training and the handlers use of the k-9. It's a shame because a good arrest will be thrown out the window.

Need to wash

The puppy will need to visit the vet to get the taste of thug out of his mouth.

no, he licked his own butt

You don't have to worry about that. The dog is very smart and the first thing the dog did after coming off the bite was to lay down and lick his own butt. Thereby, getting the taste out of his mouth. lol

BONE HA!!!

Give that GOOD DOG A SIDE OF BEEF!!!!!!

one thing about it both of

one thing about it both of them will be eating good after this soon to be lawsuit is settled.

Some one give the 4 legged

Some one give the 4 legged LEO a big bone, I Love it don't break the laws and you wont have to worry about these things happening, the judges needs to give the guy a extra year for making the dog break a sweat...LOL

Too funny. The long arm of

Too funny. The long arm of the law is in the bite. Don't break the law, you won't get bit. Way to go our 4 legged friend.

Handcuffed while being bit

being right or wrong the suspect was being bitten by the dog while he was handcuffed, the suspect almost had gotten hit by oncoming traffic on 74-76. Yes he was in the wrong but no one should have to go through that. Yes accidents do happen but the officer was being careless.

Umm..no

Are you serious? Don't you realize that because of this officer's accident that the guy will more than likely have the charges dropped. Yet another guilty criminal on the loose because of officer negligence. First a repeat offender previously convicted of murder, and now this... Way to go.

Are you kidding!! It was an

Are you kidding!! It was an accident NOT NEGLIGENCE!! Please tell me where we can sign up for your class on perfection. Had this thug not been dealing heroin he wouldnt have been in that situation. You people amaze me!

YOU FREAK ME OUT.

iT DOSENT MATTER. WRONG IS WRONG. YES THE GUY DID WRONG. BUT HE STILL FALLS UNDER THE LAWS PROTECTION. ONCE AMPRAHENDED. THE DOG SHOULD BE PUT DOWN. SORRY. I RAISE CHOWS. I KNOW ABOUGHT BIG DOGS. AND I BET THE DOG IS A MALE. THEY CANT BE TRUSTED. ALPHA MALE? EVER HEARD OF THAT? A DOG THAT WILL BITE WITH OUT GIVEING A COMAND IS PLAYING THE ROLE OF ALPHA MALE. AND HIS TRAINER MUST BE A PUNK IN THE DOGS EYES. THE DOG IS THE BOSS. THE DOG NEEDS A DIFFRENT TRAINER. ONE THAT THE DOG RESPECT, AND IS SCARED OF. REALY YOU SHOULD ONLY USE FEMALE DOGS FOR K-9. THEY ALL BEHAVE BETTER THEN THE MALES. AND ARE MORE EASY TO TRAIN.AND CONTROLE. ALSO GO AHEAD AND GIVE THE MAN SOME MONEY FOR HIS PAIN. THEN SEND HIM OFF TO JAIL. BIT OR NOT BIT. HE BROKE THE LAW. LET HIM SPEND HIS MONEY AT THE CANTEEN.
