Law enforcement dog bites suspect as car is searched

A Brunswick County man was treated at the hospital Tuesday after being bitten by a law enforcement dog. Leland Police stopped a vehicle on Highway 74-76 and found several packets of heroin and a .40-caliber semi automatic handgun in the car. Police called the Brunswick County K-9 Unit to assist them. They arrested suspect Vincent Hill. While searching the vehicle, the deputy accidentally hit the remote control to release the dog from his car. The dog bit the suspect, leaving abrasions and bite wounds on Hill's lower abdomen. "The dog got loose somehow, and started attacking one of them, while he was on the car, getting handcuffed, getting bit," said witness Lamar Claiborne. Hill was treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and released. He is being held at the Brunswick County Jail, awaiting his first appearance.

It was an accident that happened during a felony arrest for weapons and heroin! Except for the chance that this guy might get a free pass, I think it's funny... I hope the officers took their sweet time pulling the dog off him. I know if I come across this thug in my neighborhood, he won't get off so easy. Anybody that disagrees should go post his bail and take him in. Maybe you can turn him around with your liberal ideas... lol.

This pooch might have percieved a threat as you know their are trained to recognize a threat even if humans don't see it. Give him a bone or even better a steak and the drug dealer a a cell and a long sentence and call it a day. I hope this GOOD dog dosen't catch something for biting rotten flesh. Scooby dooby do.

A dog that would react like that would be too much a liability. Suppose it had been an accident scene and the officer was talking to a wrecker operator or EMT or accident victim. Then the dog gets loose and the other person is startled or raises his arm, or back away suddenly or reaches for his/her ID.....this dog will attack??? He shouldn't. If he would, he needs more training. This would not be acceptable for a dog that can do this kind of damage to be allowed to make choices on his own. This is what handlers are for.

I am a Canine handler and most of the time, the canine is trained that when the door "pops" open the canine is to go to the handler's side unless the handler is; fight, chasing, or some other active the canine WILL attack. This is how the down is been trained. Its has been said that the dog was not giving a verbal command, however canines are trained on non-verbal commands, as in a hand command, and the door popper. so yes the canine did right. THE DOG DID NOT THING WRONG. Now the handler well he should move the door poper button so that he does not hit anymore. Yes, if the dogs handler was talking to an EMS worker and that person raised their hands in what the dog perceived as an aggressive manner, that dog will attack them. Same goes if the other person is a fellow LEO. It makes sense to train a dog to attack like that. Let's say the officer gets in a fight with a suspect and the suspect knocks out the officer and continues to beat on him...should that dog not respond and attact because the officer didn't give him an order to? Of course not.

I really don't buy that a trained dog will just attack anybody if that person makes a movement. There would be a lot more police dog attacks if the dogs were allowed to use his own discretion when to go after a suspect. I am pretty sure that they act on command. I assume if a scuffle started between a suspect and an officer, the dog might intervene, but not this time.

I'm not saying a dog will attack if you make a movement...but if the owner is in the process of detaining someone and that person makes a sudden jerk or any movement the dog perceives as aggressive, he will attack to protect his owner

This will not be so funny when a lawsuit is filed against the BCSD and the Bozo that hit the wrong button. From what I have read, the suspect was being arrested and not resisting and fully cooperating with the officers. Anytime a person is in custody of any law officer, that officer(s) is fully responsible for the safety and well-being of the detainee. He definitely deserves compesation even if he did break the law. However, even if the dog did get loose, why did he attack anyone without being given the command to do so? Suppose he had gotten loose in a mall parking lot or school yard, what would he have done? Maybe the dog needs further training. Sounds like we might not be getting the whole story here.

These dogs are trained to protect their owner...if the owner was in the process of cuffing the suspect, the dog easily could have taken any movement by the suspect as a threat against his owner and attacked. The dog did exactly how he was trained to do...exactly how all LEO dogs are trained

I was a k-9 handler and trainer in New Jersey. I am sorry to say that that dog bite will cost that agency and only benefit the person apprehended. A trained k-9 is to handled in the same way as a firearm. the guy that was bitten is going to get paid big time. It goes back to the training and the handlers use of the k-9. It's a shame because a good arrest will be thrown out the window.
