A potential law suit is in place in hopes of saving sea turtles.

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Beach has filed a 60-day letter of intent to sue the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries for using gill nets they believe injure sea turtles.

The hospital recovered three more turtles Thursday night. Although these turtles were not caught in gill nets, director Jean Beasley said many are.

A representative from the attorney general's office said the letter of intent is currently under review. Then they will follow up with their client – North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries.

RIGHTS

THE RIGHTS THEY ARE TAKING AWAY IS LIFE,LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

Sea Turtles

Everyone loves sea turtles, but a man's liveyhood is more important. In these times of trying to make a living as best we can, human well being is more important. Putting the life of a turtle over a human's is wrong. I love nature as much as anyone and try to protect it at all times, but not at the expense of human life!!!!

A man's livelyhood

Do you not realize the impacts that sea turtles have on the overall ecosystem? Without them the jelly fish will grow seemingly unbounded due to less predation. If there are more jelly fish in our waters it will impact all sorts of fisheries. Not only that but it will increase the danger presented to anyone swimming. I do agree that a man's living is important, but there are other ways to fish that are less harmful to these amazing creatures.

Curious

Why is a man's ummm "liveyhood" more important. Do explain that one please!

EVERYDAY IN THIS STATE IT

EVERYDAY IN THIS STATE IT SEEMS SOMEONE IS TRYING TO TAKE THE RIGHTS OF THE CITIZENS AWAY.I PERSONALLY USE A GILL NET TO CATCH SPOTS RECREATIONALLY AND MY FATHER AND GRANDFATHER BEFORE ME AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SOMEONE CATCHING A SEA TURTLE.IM NOT SAYING IT NEVER HAPPENS BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS.WHEN DOES THIS STUFF END,MOST OF THE SOUTH END OF CAROLINA BEACH IS CLOSED BECAUSE OF SEA TURTLES AND BIRDS.
IM NOT SURE IF THIS ORGANIZATION THAT IS SUING FOR THIS IS RECEIVING STATE MONEY BUT IF IT IS WE NEED TO CONTACT OUR REPRESENTATIVES TO GET IT STOPPED.
I SURE HOPE THE STATE REPRESENTS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE THAT BUY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON FISHING LICENSES ON THIS ONE.
DONT GET ME WRONG I THINK SAVING SEA TURTLES IS A GOOD THING BUT LETS USE SOME COMMON SENSE.

Turtle eggs, turtle

Turtle eggs, turtle hatchlings, turtle rehabilitation, glueing transmitters on their shells to track where they go.........who cares???? It would be nice if these folks expended as much time and energy to helping human beings in need.

Rights?

By the way, what rights are you saying that the State is taking away?

Come on.

You really think the State is going to represent the will of the people? People have been trying to get beach closures and water access rights given back to the public for years now with state representatives giving in to special intrest groups.

However, North Caroina is the only state that still allows the use of Gill nets in local waters. I think it is time for the State take into consideration what others have known for some time. Gill nets are doing more harm then good.
