Thursday night, Leland's Town Council was briefed on the proposed budget for next fiscal year. The town will be working with $5.8 million, and needs to make an eight percent reduction compared to this year's budget. Some residents are not happy about where the town made cuts. They are getting rid of the DARE program, but keeping $264,000 for recycling. Leland Mayor Walter Futch said, "The recycling program was started in last year's budget and it's a five year contract. We can't just cancel that contract, that's part of it. But if we could, we wouldn't I don't think. I believe in recycling, I think a lot of people in Leland believe in recycling." Mayor Futch said they have not laid off any employees. There are some vacant positions that are not being filled at this time.
