We're learning more about a Brunswick County teenager who married her 40-year-old track coach this week. How did this relationship evolve?
Sixteen-year-old Windy Hager's mother gave NewsChannel 3 copies of e-mails, phone records and letters. They all document the relationship between their daughter, and the high school coach more than twice her age.
It's enough to give any parent cause for concern. Phone records that show text messages between Coach Brent Wuchae and a then, 15-year-old, Windy Hager in this instance, more than 60 times in a single month. Some of those texts were sent at 3 o'clock in the morning.
Then, there's the e-mails. Windy writes to her coach... venting that her mother is trying to stop their relationship.
"I don't think it's her business," Windy writes. "Personally, if you're my best friend, and I consider you my big brother, she should back off."
In other e-mails Windy's parents shared with NewsChannel 3, she writes to a friend, "He is the apple of my eye. I've never felt this way for someone, but I just don't want to lose him because of my parents' power trips."
It was exchanges like these that had Windy's parents worried sick.
"Keep your children close," Betty Hager, Windy's Mom said. "You think your kids are safe at school and church functions but we can tell you for a fact they're not."
Betty Hager says word got back to Coach Wuchae that Windy's parents were suspicious of the relationship. That may be why he wrote them this letter, explaining his side of the story.
Wuchae writes: "Never once have I crossed the line... I truly promise our bond is nothing but a strong friendship. I would not betray your trust or put myself in any situation that would jeopardize my career or solid reputation. Windy and I are only friends and that is all it will ever be."
Windy's parents thought all along a far different relationship was occurring. Suspicions that were only confirmed when the coach resigned and married their daughter on Monday.
"He would not stay away from our child," Hager said. "If he ever said he tried, the fact that he was married to her, proves that that wasn't true."
NewsChannel 3 went by the house the newlyweds are sharing today. Windy was there, and so was Brent. But when asked for an interview Wuchae, he said his lawyer had advised him not to comment.

I think this whole situation is just disgusting. But what I really can't understand is how the parents could fathom signing the marriage license. Then they want to turn around and complain about the marriage

I am shocked to hear this, but not suprised. As a former student in Mr.Wuchae's Science class at Southern Guilford High School I can honestly say that every student of his knew that this would eventually happen. He was always very flirtatious and often crossed the teacher/student line. There were many rumours of various love affairs going on between him and some of the students. I always felt very uncomfortable in his class. I feel very sorry for this poor girl. I don't understand why he was still allowed to teach even after he resigned from SG.

Maybe everyone is missing a point. Perhaps they have hit on a new form of assisted living for seniors. After all, when he is eligible for Social Security; she'll be in the prime of life.
On a more serious note, why did the Parents wait until after the wedding for this to come to light? With the media mentality of our society; I am confident the media would have swarmed all over this 6 months or a year ago. At that time, she would have been 15 and I do not believe NC law would have allowed "The Coach" to escape legal challenges by marriage as the parnets could not consent to the marriage of a 15 year old.
And certainly, public opinion and the light of the media might have forced the school board and administration to take a different approach. They sure seem to be playing like Groundhogs hiding from the light of day. Do any of them think this will not be an issue when the next election comes around?
Let's not forget, while the parents granted their consent, "The Coach" could have declined the opportunity if as he alleges the relationship was truly platonic. Why did he feel the need to seek refuge in the bounds of matrimony?
One hope is the VMI shirt he was pictured in was borrowed; he certainly would not have gained that type of mature thought process in Lexington.
One thing is for certain, you can bet members of the Legal Profession have been attempting to contact the parents; and you can also bet the School Board has notified its Liability Insurance Carrier of a possible problem.
Let's see what the school board requires of future faculty and staff. If there are drastic changes, you can bet they know they have a problem.

In the course of human history, this is not an unusual situation. When the United States became a nation, it was not unusual for older men to marry teenage girls. It's when the older person 'demands' or 'forces' a relationship like marriage that it becomes immoral. The coach sacrificed his 'job' and 'reputation' in order to be with this young woman. He is being judged unfairly and let's face the truth, if everyone was truly honest with themselves, they knew about the 'facts of life' way before the age of 16. There are individuals who are 25, 35, and even 55 who can't truly or maturely love or share their lives with anyone! Just because most 15 and 16 year old people in our culture of today aren't taught or can't handle the responsibility that comes with love and a relationship shouldn't mean there are a few out there who can. It's way better to marry one person who loves you than to be single and have multiple sex partners that can hurt you and put you at risk for diseases and heartache year after year. It's a shame and slander to call this man a pedophile in order to prove oneself to be politically correct. Even the Bible says that man is 'ignorant' and does not know what He thinks. Rules, legalism, and pride can surely destroy life. I understand the girl's family's concerns...but face the truth...she's not a girl anymore. Don't destroy what God may have brought together, even if it makes no sense to you. I think their situation is mostly based on old fashioned love and romance and NOT just lust. I think that it's ridiculous how someone of the Coach's age could find attraction to a girl that is like a third of his own age. I just don't understand. Yes, Windy's mother says that she did all she could to stop the relationship, yet she signed the document for her to marry the man. Then she complains on the news about it. Windy honestly doesn't know the meaning of a mature relationship or love. She's 16. I personally think that it's absurd. This whole thing is way out of line, it's making other kids think that it's o.k to mess around and have a relationship with their elders. Hopefully the adult in the situation would know better than to go along with it. It could not only ruin reputations but it could ruin friendships that you once had unless you're friends will really stick with you through ANYTHING.

Although I am not like her best friend or anything we did hang out once or twice at school this year and I have to say I did not see this coming at all. I am so shocked. Windy is a really amazing persoan and I just cannot believe she would do something like this. She was inducted into the National Honor Society this year and I just couldn't help but thinking how much of an oxymoron it is that someone as smart as she is would do something so... Anyway, I just think it's terrible that the relationship between her and her family is completely torn as of now, and I also think that it is a crying shame that NO ONE did anything about this sooner. I mean come on, recorded phone calls at two in the morning doesn't count as evidence to an inapropriate relationship between a student and a teacher? Obviously something is wrong here, and it starts with every authoritative figure involved. I do mean EVERY authoritative figure involved, including Windy's friends. Yes, I am including myself. The students at school had an idea of what was going on and if we had said something, maybe this could have been prevented. We have two officers charged with Sexual Battery, both on duty, one working an after school program at shallotte middle school and the other will be at Rourk Library in Shallotte today hanging with the kids? Just wanting you to know I did contact Katie Mcgee and all of the School board. I contacted the school and also the state from what I had seen. They did nothing. The school and school board would not even answer my emails.

The reason that the incident
The reason that the incident with Clinton a Monica was different was that both of them were of a legal age. The age of consent in North Carolina is 16, however, because this had been building up, it is being shown that this relationship started during this young lady's freshman year, when she was 14, two years below the legal age. Clinton got in trouble for lying to a grand jury, this is hugely important because it appears to everyone that it was illegal.

I watched the WWAY report on this last evening & have read this article today & one part of this story doesn't pass the smell test.....
Windy's parents are so upset & rightly so. They went to school & to the sherrif about a 40 year old teacher having an improper relationship ship with there 16 year old daughter & got no action. They are feeding the TV news shows with intimate details of the couple & exposing their emails & text messages.
If they are so against it, WHY did they sign for their daughter to marry him??? That's the part that makes no sense!
And now that they have signed & given their legal permission for them to marry, why keep contacting the news shows? Seems best, since they have already caved in to Windy's desires, to try & make the best of a bad situation.

I have one child in South Brunswick and a another that has graduated. Previously I had gone to the school with concerns about another male teacher and the way he conducted his class. Clearly there is a sexist boy's club atmosphere allowed there which fosters disrespect of students such as Windy. I was told this teacher showed the male students pornography on a computer in the classroom and voted on "best body parts" of female students. These were not the only complaints. In the school's defense this complaint was not made to the current principal but this teacher remains. Maybe instead gossiping we should all be having a serious discussion with our elected school board!!!! Predators do not belong in our schools in ANY job position.

Quit dogging Law Enforcement
Everyone please quit dogging the sheriff's department and police. What they investigated was inappropriate but not illegal. We all need to push our law makers to pass laws to protect our children. As law dog stated earlier teenagers can quit school and move out at 16 but we as parents are still financially responsible for them. If they don't live at home we still have to sign medical consent AND pay the medical bills. If parents want their children examined to determine if they are sexually active, a child has the right to refuse this medical examination. Let's all call our legislators and have them pass a law that allows parents to be parents or relieves parents of their financial responsibilities when your children want to get drunk, screw, drop out of school and vandalize other peoples property. It horrifies me to know that our government still allows this. It doesn't matter if the parents allowed this or not it should be illegal. Our government is cracking down and child predators are arrested. But, how is it, that these older man and woman are legally allowed to marry these children. Laws are put in place to protect our children. The government says because they are children and they are not mature or old enough to make a decision. Such as certain jobs, driving, voting, smoking and drinking. But yet they allow the under age children or the parents/ guardians to make a decision such as marriage. When a marriage license application is turned in and it refers to a minor and an adult. The adult should be investigated and arrested, and child services should investigate and should put the child in foster care. This marriage should not be allowed. I feel that I can shed light on this matter the best. I was married in Maryland at the age of 14 yrs. old to a 22 yr. old man. My parents and the state allowed this. I was a child, I know looking back, that I was in love with the idea of being in love, not in love. At 14 yrs. old, I did not know what love was. This marriage ruined my life physically, mentally, and emotionally. He was unfaithful, dominating, controlling, and abusive. I was granted a divorce prior to me turning 22 yrs. old. However, This marriage took it's toll on me. Being one of four children I'm the only one with infertility problems. I have lower back and hip problems from being thrown into walls and other objects. When I did go to the police to file reports, they knew my husband and I was discouraged when trying to file police reports. Not all of these adults who marry these children are bad people. They say love is something that grows over time. We need to raise the legal age to wed, and teach our children that this is not tolerated and is not ok. If they love you now they should still love you at 18 yrs old, no matter if they are pregnant or not..

I hope this man is sent to jail and no chance to get out. This is a disgrace. If he wanted to marry her he should have let her grow up first. Age difference is not the problem. She should have been allowed to finish High School and College with no interference from him. Considering his age and the fact that he was an authority figure and more than twice her age.....he should have been strong for both of them.... If this guy goes free and is now "married" why did BSL discharge and jail their officer for what was a documented consentual relationship with a 15yr old and who had been known for sleeping with other adults (who are also up on charges)? What these parents did or did not do is not the real issue. We have a TEACHER who found a child who was vulnerable for whatever reason and went in for the kill. We have a school system who it seems was so happy to get rid of him that they failed to follow up on the paperwork to keep others from hiring him. Who else knew about this man and kept silent!!!

TRUE LOVE IS A VERY HARD THING TO FIND AND IF THIS GIRL AND HER HUSBAND HAVE FOUND IT BETWEEN THEM I PERSONALLY AM VERY HAPPY FOR THEM AND TRULY WISH THEM A VERY HAPPY FUTURE. IN MANY STATES THIS WOULD NOT EVEN BE NEWSWORTHY! DOES THIS NOT CLEARLY SHOW THE WORLD HOW BACKWARDS NORTH CAROLINA REALLY IS? Dear Ash,
True love is patient, kind, loving, respectfull and most of all would have been there in a few years. If this man truly loved her he would have insisted on her finishing at least highschool. Another thing Ash, he would have never, under any circumstances come between her and her family. He would have respected that boundry that her parents had created and made sure that she did too.
I'm not saying if it's right or it's wrong, but I will tell you this. The way he has done this is wrong and there is not getting past that.

ASH, I'm sorry, but there is medical evidence that teenage minds are not yet mature. Anyone who has been around teenage girls knows this. Mood swings, attatchment, and rash decisions are not uncommon amoungst the group "teenagers". There is a reason there are laws of consent, and although the law for N. Carolina is 16, this relationship has been going on since the girl was 14. The fact of the matter is that at 14, there are no people on earth who can make a completely informed decision, and that is why this is a mistake.
