WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The saying is "Turn around, Don't drown", but for some Wilmington drivers that's just not enough to stave off the temptation to try and drive through high water on the roads.
A Chevy Trailblazer got stuck in the middle of the street after trying to navigate through the ponding water on New Centre Drive.
"We had the barriers here and they had the barriers down there but from here you can't really see them," said Travis Ray who owns the stranded trailblazer, "So we decided we were just gonna try to go back home and we ended up coming back through here where the bus stop was and a lot of people have been doing it."
Those who did not try to make their way through the water tried to make their way around it.
The news doesn't get better for businesses in the area, either. Businesses in flooded areas took a substantial hit. Their sales are washed out since their customers can't flood in.
"We experience it every time we have the waters rise like this on New Centre Drive and beyond because there is a runoff problem here and i do believe the city has been aware of it for several years," said Cheryl Benson who is the manager of the Golden Corral on New Centre Drive. "It does need to be corrected because every time we have torrential rains or large volumes of rain over a period of time in the day or evening that it will rise
That rising water is something many people are ready to see dry up.
