Local woman volunteers for 65 years

READ MORE: Local woman volunteers for 65 years
WILMINGTON -- It's no small accomplishment to do anything for 65 years. A Wilmington woman has seen a lot of history in her time with the American Red Cross. Eighty-five-year-old Alice Snead can't do enough volunteer work. "I have to have my Red Cross fix," she said. "I just have to do something for Red Cross. You know, every now and then." She's been at it now for 65 years -- doing everything from nursing soldiers wounded in World War II to going door to door, soliciting donations. At one point Alice served as the Cape Fear chapter's assistant director. She's received a series of honors, including an outstanding volunteer award from the state's governor. Vicki Labelle is the executive director of the Cape Fear chapter of the American Red Cross. She said, "She brings valuable history and knowledge of the organization, the area and the Red Cross history to our chapter." And according to some employees at the local chapter, Mrs. Snead holds the title as the area's first blood donor. "I was so excited to think that I could either prolong a life or save a life that I went home and it was the middle of July and real hot and I started my fall cleaning," Snead said. She hasn't looked back since. Alice has donated blood a countless number of times, and hopes others will do the same.
During the month of December the American Red Cross is offering blood donors the chance to win a $1,000 gift card. Donors present to give the gift of life between Dec. 19 and January 6 will also receive an American Red Cross long-sleeve T-shirt. The Blood Donation Center will also have special food and giveaways for al donors. The Blood Donation Center will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays: 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Fridays: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Thursday hours will be added on Dec. 20 and 27, Saturday and Sunday hours on Dec. 22-23 and 29-30. Please call 254-GIVE (4483) for appointments on blood drives in the area. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets.
