Long last diplomas

READ MORE: Long last diplomas

Some North Carolinians who didn't graduate from high school, may now be eligible to receive their high school diplomas after all. A change in state law affects students who did not pass competency tests in reading and math, and/or the computer skills tests. This law affects former students from as far back as the class of '81. To be eligible, applicants must have passed all other graduation requirements. Latasha Allison says not having a high school diploma has made it tough to find a job. "The math competency test, that's what held me back." But a change in state law will help her dream of getting that diploma come true. "The only students that are eligible for this are those who met graduation requirements, other than passing the competency test in reading, math, or computer skills,” said Rick Holliday, NHC Schools Asst. Superintendent. The competency test examines reading, math, and basic computer skills at an eighth grade level. From 1981 to July of this year, passing the test was required to get a high school diploma. Under the new requirement, high school students still have to pass five end-of-course exams in subjects like algebra and English, but the competency test has been eliminated. The law is retro-active, meaning some former students will finally get their high school diploma. "Oh, it was a blessing for me, it was a doorway to open definitely and I just feel like I have an opportunity now to pursue my career,” Allison said. Allison had been taking GED classes in hopes of passing the math portion of the competency test. She says now she can focus on earning her culinary degree, and maybe one day open a restaurant. "That was my dream, and I wasn't going to let anything stop me. I was determined." Students who dropped out of high school are not affected by the rule change. Former students can contact their high schools to see if they're eligible. Students have through July 2014 to petition their schools.

YOU DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE STORY!

YA'LL DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE DIPLOMA'S. IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED HIGH SCHOOL ALL THE WAY GRADUATED WITH A CERTIFICATE OF HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION GOT ALL OF YOUR 20 CREDITS IN HIGH SCHOOL WALKED WITH THE CLASS AND DIDN'T PASS ONE OF THE COMPENTENCY TEST TO GET YOUR DIPLOMA. THE DIPLOMAS ARE NOW BEING HANDED TO PEOPLE WITH THIS SITUATION. "NOT DROP OUTS" THEY WILL HAVE TO GET THEIR "GED" IT'S NOT WHAT YOU CALLED A HAND OUT IT'S BY STATE LAW NOW. IF MRS.ALLISON WAS DUMB YOU WOULDN'T HAVE COMPELETED HIGH SCHOOL AND GOT HER CREDITS. SHE DIDN'T PASS THAT TEST BY TWO POINTS IN 2003 AND WONDERED WHY SHE COULDN'T GET HER DIPLOMA THEN. " TAKE A LOOK AT YOURSELF BEFORE YOU START JUDGING PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

Just be real

Really people it's people who passed the test and still can't read and do math.So people that past the test can't add either that's why H&R block is getting paid ever year to do your taxes. Are you not lazy or just stupid. Watch what you call people because some people feel like you are the same.Study to do your own taxes then you won't have to pay some one that proble did not pass the test to do them. Don't be so quick to judge.

You must be one of these

You must be one of these lucky ones who were given a diploma without learning the skills.

This is fair

Some of these comments amaze me. I was unable to complete high school, unrelated to my competency test. Not even this new law could help me. Is it to be assumed that I am useless or incompetent because I don't have a piece of paper with my name on it? A few of these comments are riddled with grammatical errors, but since you graduated high school, it is okay for you to butcher the english language? Read the story before you start ranting. The students eligible must pass five exams before being awarded a diploma, not 'handed out'. The competency test was a cakewalk. If they had trouble passing that, they won't even be able to read the end of course exams!

TELL THAT TO BILL GATES!

TELL THAT TO BILL GATES! HE'S A GENIUS AND DIDN'T NEED A DIPLOMA OR HELP FROM AYONE!! HE DID IT ON HIS OWN! QUIT HATING!

Bill Gates

...Dropped out of Harvard. He 'sorta kinda' already had that high school diploma. I guess you posted that without getting help from "ayone"?

Here is a new concept...How

Here is a new concept...How about fend for yourself or die. Its called survival of the fittest and it happens in nature all the time.

Here's to another win for

Here's to another win for the inept and lazy. That's okay, your basic accountant who is doing your payroll can swindle you for all kinds of money and you'll never know the difference. Just ask mike tyson. Cheers.

Let's hear it for the stupid and lazy

Very soon, they will be running this country. We're handing it to them.

Not To Worry Common...

It will be a "Kumbaya" global village under a nanny world government after the US (so strategically) collapses. Our dummies will think that everything will be handed to them, no problemo. Unfortunately, 2 things will happen: The realization will set in that there are a few "high ups" exempt from this new Socialist lifestyle; Also, due to human nature, cultures will never be able to fully accept one another...they never have and never will. This will be the demise of the global village. Arm heavily, store plenty of food and be physically fit for when it happens.

They have learned

Like clevenative has learned, it is easier to sit at home and get a check than it is to go earn one. I love it when he cries he doesn't have enough money for a phone but he can own dogs.

Re: This is wrong

This is so wrong if you cannot pass basic competency test then you should not be awarded a diploma. There are tons of high schools students that study and struggle but make it happen. I feel this is a slap in the face to them. I guess this further perpetuates a generation of people that will sit around and wait for someone to help them out or say it’s not fair, instead of working hard and studying.

2+2=?

From the story: "She says now she can focus on earning her culinary degree, and maybe one day open a restaurant." Great, but don't ask her to do payroll, accounts payable or double a recipe.

YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

I CAN READ AND WRITE AND DO MATH THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THE REASON WHY I WENT BACK TO GET MY HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA WAS BECAUSE I DIDN'T PASS THE COMPENTENCY TEST BY 3 POINTS WHICH WAS VERY CLOSE TO PASSING. AND THAT WAS BACK IN 2003 OVER THE YEARS I DID GET A JOB WORKING WITH FOOD EVEN A POSITION TO BE IN CHARGE OF THINGS.I DON'T WORK NOW BECAUSE I BECAME A STAY AT HOME MOM WHEN I GOT MARRIED FOR A WHILE AND IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL RIGHT AWAY. I DIDN'T CHOOSE OR WANTED TO REALLY SHARE MY STORY WITH ANYONE BECAUSE I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK BUT I WAS ASKED TO DO THIS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE MAY BE IN THE SAME SITUATION AS ME AND IT WAS BETTER TO GET THE STORY OUT NOT JUST ABOUT ME BUT ABOUT DIPLOMAS BEING RELEASED TO THOSE WHO COMPLETED HIGH SCHOOL ALL THE WAY TO THE 12TH GRADE JUST DIDN'T PASS THAT ONE COMPETENCY TEST BEFORE GRADUATION TIME. SO IF THEY DIDN'T CHANGE THE RULES I WILL STILL BE GOING TO A MATH CLASS THROUGH GED TO GET MY DIPLOMA!!!!!!!

Why didn't you just retake

Why didn't you just retake the competency test. If you completed all of the requirements for high school, you should be able to pass it. I took it, it isn't that difficult.

This is absolutely

This is absolutely ridiculous. If they couldn't read and do math then, they can't now. A piece of paper is not going to change anything as far as ability goes.

Awarding of Diplomas

I guess I am missing something here. If the people failed their test requirements at the time, why do they magically get rewarded a diploma now? Maybe we should just forget about any requirements and award everyone a diploma for just showing up in class. I think the NC lawmakers have gotten into the politically correct category. NC allots over 50% of its budget to education, and this is what we have to resort to in order to graduate students?

What is this country coming

What is this country coming too? Why don't they just do away with schools altogether and let you order a diploma online. If you could not pass the competency test, how did you make it to 11th or 12th grade in the first place?
