There is a bumper crop of strawberries this year across North Carolina, but few customers. This is causing a major crisis for berry farmers. Michael Beal, VP of NC Strawberry Association and owner of Kildee Farms in Ramseur, says the crisis is statewide. He says that berry plants are producing a lot more, larger fruit this year than in years past. As a result, the production time will be much shorter. In other words, berries are coming in all at once instead of being spread out over a 2-month period.
Faylene Whitaker at Whitaker Farms in Asheboro agrees with Beal, saying “it’s a gonna be a short crop this year.” She says because of the very cold winter and the sudden hot spell, plants are producing all at once.
