Lumber truck accident causes huge delays

READ MORE: Lumber truck accident caused huge delays Tuesday
A major headache on our local bridges Tuesday afternoon lingered well into the evening. A tractor trailer loaded with lumber overturned on the 421 exit ramp near the battleship, spilling its load all over the road. Traffic was brought to a standstill. Trooper Jonathan King was at the site of the mess. King said, "The load shifted out of the trailer, causing it to spill onto highway 74, which then caused the traffic to spill over." The accident happened around noon. Law enforcement said the driver, William David Ridge of Ashboro was speeding as he attempted to yield onto 74. Cars attempting to make their way to Brunswick County were not moving at all. There are still marks on the median as witnesses say the tractor trailer drove over the median and that's when it flipped over and spilled lumber everywhere. By late afternoon, the lumber had been moved to the shoulder of the road and remaining debris was blocked off with cones. The highway patrol said there should be no problem with Wednesday morning's commute.

Accidents happen that's a

Accidents happen that's a fact. The time taken to clear the scene is unacceptable. There is no reason why it took so long to get the scene cleared. There is never a sense of urgency to get the scene cleared. Thousands of people who had nothing to do with the accident wasted time, gas and patience because of less than motivated 1st responders.

truck accident

The accident and subsequent traffic delays reinforces the need for an improved traffic pattern to and from Brunswick county. The DOT have come out with plans but no real date on the improvements. Again the infrastructure of New Hanover and Brunswick countys has failed to meet the growth of our populations. Hopefully, some day, we will see a new bridge or a new highway, for now...... we must just learn to be patient........

If they would just complete

If they would just complete the I-140 bypass to 74/76, it would give an alternative route when traffic gets bottlenecked at the bridge. Anything happens near the Memorial Bridge and both routes into town end up blocked. It is rediculous.

I-140 bypass

Agreed. The sooner, the better. If I remember correctly, it's supposed to cross 74/76 and connect with Hwy 17 near the intersection of Hwy 87(Maco Rd.). That will relieve alot of the congestion at the area of the Memorial Bridge and Hwy 421.
