READ MORE: Malpass Elementary out until next Monday

Denise Malpass shares more than a name with the school; her son is a first grader at the closed facility. She says the school closing has been terrible timing. "You got to get a baby sitter for the kids, it's an extra kid and it's right around the holidays." School officials closed the doors to Malpass Corner Elementary School last week when a fire started in a boy’s bathroom. Administrators decided it would take two weeks before students could head back to class because of extensive damage and clean up efforts. Some parents say, two weeks, is way too long. Now it's up to the school board to decide how the students will make up for the lost days. Concerned parent Ronda Murphy said, “I'm more concerned about the time they are going to make up." The superintendent of Pender County, who declined to speak with us on camera, said the days will have to be made up somehow. She mentioned a temporary location would have been too difficult to find because other schools in the area are already at capacity. Adriana Lanier has a fifth grader at Malpass Corner and said “It's been kind of frustrating for her. She says everyday, ‘mom I miss school, I'm ready to go back to school. I miss my friends.’ “ The superintendent would not comment until the board meets tonight on just how to make up the missed class days. Malpass Corner is scheduled to re-open Monday, December 15th.
