Man arrested, accused of slitting throat

NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- A Castle Hayne man remains behind bars Monday morning accused of slitting a man's throat. It happened around six Saturday morning.

The assault happened at 6005 Orange Street in Castle Hayne. The victim's roommate recounts how it all unfolded.

Chuck Negri said, "I was awakened by a knock on my door in my bedroom Scott was… When I come to the door Scott was there with blood all over him, bleeding profusely."

Negri says after that knock on the door, he immediately called 911. "My first reaction was to do whatever I could to help."

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office says 38-year-old James Calvin Garner Jr. is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and communicating threats.

Negri says his roommate's throat was sliced almost from ear to ear. He also says he's not sure why Garner assaulted his roommate, but he thinks it was over a woman. What Negri does know is that if he hadn't been home, Warmouth might not be alive.

"If I had been gone the only thing I know is that when Scott came knocking on my door I wouldn't have been able to answer it and I don't know what would have happened then," Negri said.

Scott Warmouth was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. At last check he's listed in serious condition.

Garner is in the New Hanover County jail under $100,000 bond.

I think that the justice

I think that the justice system here sucks. Its all about money, if you got it, then u can get away with what you please. There is also alot of racism here. The man who stabbed my father 25 times in June had a 56,000.00 bond and is currently on house arrest. And needless to say, he's white and my dad is black. and here you have a black man who stabbed a white man and he gets a 100,000.00 bond. I dont know about any of u, but to me, right is right, and wrong is wrong...regardless of race or bank account balances!

Look at this guy's record....

...then tell me that our legal system is not totally broken...

Another career criminal

Seems our justice system likes criminals on the street to prey on us all. This guy is no different. Another loser. Look at that record. just got out of prison in Nov 06 for ASSAULT BY STRANGULATION. Now he has slit a mans throat. Whats next? He will be out soon.

James Garner

I know James Garner, The girlfriend he shot last time you would have to know her to realize why he shot at her, but did not mean to actually hit her. He is an austic person that has never been helped by the prison system. He only thinks he deserves trash woman like Christine and Jody. He has always been easy to lead around by the nose. He said he did not cut Scott, I don't know if he did or not, but I'm going to wait to hear all the information before I send him to jail forever.

Wilmington Crime

I have been thinking about visiting Wilmington to see if it is a place that I might want to move to so I've just started reading the news stories on this website. It's a little sad to think that a city that has tried to renew itself and has such positive geographical attributes is also dealing with the fall-out from drugs. I know that all cities have problems with crime and drugs, but from two of the posts on this page by former residents, it sounds like this wasn't always the case for Wilmington. Can anyone on this site tell me why I should consider moving to Wilmington. Considering the recent murders I've read about, I'm not even sure I should consider a vacation there. What's the upside?

TO: Wimington Crime Writer

Honey there is no upside around here anymore. We have lost our young to the streets, drugs, and gangs. And it is not getting any better.I have lived here for 20+ years and I am considering moving away from here and moving to the country some where just so I will feel comfortable about sending my children to school. And yes for all of you thinking that crime is every where you cant hide from it,I know this. But I will do what ever it takes to try to protect my children from the violence that is going on around here and every one knows that the drugs,GANGS,and violence has tripled in the past 5 or so years. And it is a shame when you cant let your children outside to play unless you are standing right there beside of them.So would I tell you YES come and move to Wilmington b/c it is a lovely place.NO I would not tell anyone to move here if you are ok where you are at and if you feel safe there then STAY there. And for all of you who are reading this and thinking (well if you dont like it,leave)Dont worry I am working on that right now...

why you should move to wilmington

i was raised my whole life in wilmington. it is one of the most beautiful places i have ever been. like you said crime is in every city. i lived there for 38 years and never had a problem with any one. the only reason i am not there now is because there was not enough work for me and my husband. if i could afford to i would move back. i live in phoenix az. the crimes, rapes, robberys, car thefts and murders are 90% more than wilmington is. i would much rather live in wilmington than one of the bigger citys like i do now.i hope i changed your mind about wilmington, every one is very friendly and it is so pretty.

Visit

Keep in mind anything you read on this site or others will be subjective. Do your research on when and where crime occurs, visit the area to see our city for yourself, check out the schools, and then ask yourself if you will be hanging out on street corners after midnight or befriending drug dealers.
I have lived here many years and have found very little to dislike about Wilmington. Sure, the summers are busy with tourists (who bring their own brand of crime in some cases) but tourists also provide a lot of revenue to our area and allow many locals to earn a good living.

To visit or not to visit Wilmington

I was wondering if there would be a positive comment about Wilmington - and it seems as though yours is. While you have said there is little to dislike, you didn't say what you like about Wilmington. Sounds like others are saying, "It's too crowded; politicians are corrupt; city/county services are in need of much updating; taxes are getting higher and of course, there is the crime factor. My point is that all cities have crime areas and problems, but the question is, is what, if anything do you love that makes you want to live there; or are you thinking, I wish I could get out of this town, or I'm glad I left.

What I like about Wilmington

I'm not a Wilmington or even a NC native, but have been here a long time and am married to a native. I've lived in small towns, medium and large cities, and on a farm, so I'm comparing my experiences here with living in a variety of other places.

What I like:
People are friendly, for the most part. People are approachable; they talk with you and try to get to know you. There are actual neighborhoods here and neighbors act neighborly. The schools are some of the best in the state, which is important to me because I have children. The public services are good to excellent, including our police and fire departments and public libraries. There are some amazing churches here that are involved in their community in a postive way. Traffic is worse that it used to be, but definitely manageable and not anything like a large city (yet) - you just need to learn which roads to avoid at what time. We have many wonderful museums, an aquarium, indoor and outdoor musical performances, a theatre (the kind with a stage and actors), an arboretum, festivals, historical sites, beaches, a major hospital, a community college, and four year university.

Things I don't like:
Hurricanes, mosquitoes, those who move here and complain about it not being like where they came from and those who complain or criticize but are not willing to help or contribute.

Hope this helps in your decision.

Don't move here, its crowded

Don't move here, its crowded enough!!!!

Wilmington

Your comment on don't move here is right on ** Too many non natives here already raising our real estate, taxes and cost of living.

Southern'er charm?

What happened to Southern charm? Fair dinkin. What's a native anyway, just someone that was born in your state? Hopefully all native Wilmingtonians are not as smug and arrogant as you are. The people that move to your state pay real estate taxes too and feed your economy. And, if the tourist didn't visit, spend money and/or relocate there you'd be complaining about paying all those taxes yourself.

To move here or not to move, you ponder?

You've checked the crime compared to other cities per capita. What would be your logical conclusion as an intelligent individual?
If you have the money to get across the bridge to "Figure Eight" where the stats are low in crime, then "come on down"; otherwise keep on looking.

The upside?

Monumental traffic on a road system thirty years outdated, raw sewage flowing into creeks and the Intracoastal Waterway from overloaded sewers, and a City Council and County Board of Commissioners who believe that your money is their money, so they feel free to give it away to any of their pet projects or groups.

See? We're much more than a staggering crime problem caused by drugs.

If you come to visit, be armed!

WHERE'S THE TRUTH

Some of you making comments on this article know these people very well and probably know what really happened. If you do why don't you tell the whole truth? James Calvin Garner lived with Jody for the past month or so. Jody had already put the word out that as soon as she got his Friday pay she was going to break it off and she used Scott to do it. She spent a full day and full night with lots of alcohol and etc playing these men against each other until she got what she wanted. Where is she and what happens to her for setting these men up? Even though Calvin is dumb enough to play into it and I agree he should pull time for it, why should this girl get away with playing with peoples lives and walk away free. Who will she want next?

If I knew

If I knew the "whole" story as you put it, I wouldn't have asked if anyone had any other information on this. I have heard "rumors" and was trying to get at the "truth" you speak of. And as far as I can tell these are all adults who make their own choices and from what I can tell based on what you wrote- they chose to hang our with this Jody. Is she a good person if what you said is true- of course not- but then I guess the drinking and drugging are more important then making the safe and healthy decision to not be around these people or engage in these activities.

Another ?

I have another question- if this guy did time for shooting his girlfriend in the past- why on earth was he given bond at all?????

Garner.

This guy already did time for shooting his girlfriend. He apparently slit this guy's throat because he was talking to a woman that he (Garner) was interested in. Should be locked up for good.

?

Does anyone have any other information as to why this happened other then what has been reported?

Huh

Chuck is a friend of my husband, and apparently it was over a woman. The victim spoke to this woman previously not knowing Calvin was interested in her. They drank together all that night and then he attacked him. This guy already did time for shooting his girlfriend.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, I had heard he threatened him over this girl in the past and involved some others in it- then went back that night to attack him.

HUH

100,000 DOLLARS IS IT!!! Good grief..no wonder people do what they want without fear of consequences.

Where?

Where is all this trash coming from? We have guys shooting, stabbing and cutting each other? Why can't we put these people far far away where they can stab and fight each other and leave the rest of us out of it? Yet another Wilmington dirtbag.

Escape From Masonboro Island

Yeah! Make someplace like in the movie "Escape From New York". I say make Masonboro Island like that. Put up a big wall around it and put them all in there. If you need something in there, you send in Snake Pliskin. Who do we talk to get this started? Maybe we can get Snake Pliskin to come to Wilmington.

tent city

i am from wilmington i live in phoenix now. we have a jail here called tent city. the prisoners have to stay in tents, in the 105 degree weather and makes them were pink panies and eat green bologny, no tv, games, breaks or nothing. he says why should our taxes pay for them to have fun. i think if more places and police departments were like joe the sheirf here people would think twice before doing the crime.when you go to jail these days they give you everything. tv to watch food to eat. breaks telephone calls a free place to stay, so why do crimminals even care, they will be taken care of and we pay for it. joe always says if you come to my jail you want be comming back. and i dont think he has had any body come back yet.

Election

There is an election coming, make sure you vote!
