Man arrested in Wrightsville Beach attack

READ MORE: Man arrested in Wrightsville Beach attack
Twenty-eight-year-old Hugh Sandlin is in the New Hanover County Jail, after turning himself in to Wrightsville Beach Police around six o'clock Wednesday evening. "He was very forthcoming with me,” said Detective Mike Altilio. “I talked to him on the phone and he agreed to turn himself around and come right back.” Sandlin is charged with assault with inflicting serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon, in this case, his fists. The brutal attack happened around 2:30 Saturday morning. Forty-one-year-old Jud Gee was riding his bike on South Lumina Avenune back to his beach house when he was allegedly assaulted by Sandlin. Detectives are not saying much about the motive only that Gee and Sandlin had never met. “There was some things that triggered that event to occur, unfortunately, I think it was sort of a mistaken of identity. Basically, he thought Mr. Gee was somebody else,” said Detective Altilio. Jud Gee has suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack, including a fractured skull, bleeding around the brain, and multiple broken bones. His family has been notified of Sandlin's arrest. Sandlin is in the New Hanover County Jail under a $50,000 bond. Detectives say he was on his way to Asheville when he called to turn himself in.
