WINNABOW -- Brunswick county has been busy cleaning up a Winnabow man's property they deemed a junkyard. But the property owner say the county did more than just clean up junk.
Earlier this month the county started cleaning up Rivers's yard for him because he didn't get it done in time. But now Rivers say they destroyed some of his personal belongings in the process.
Rivers has been in a battle with the county over his property for years. The county says some of the junk in his yard is contaminated and harmful to nearby neighbors.
Rivers says when the county started clearing his property they went overboard. "She had flowers over there, flowers over here and a strawberry bed here."
"This is beyond stepping the line," Rivers said. "People better wake up around here because what you see here could happen to you."
The county says everything they hauled away fits the reasonable definition of junk and that they gave Rivers years to clean up his mess.
Rivers says the recent pressure to clean up is for a different reason.
"They're building all around here. They've got a big development going in down the road about a mile and a half so what does that tell you," Rivers said. "They wanted property around here -- they're not going to get it."
The county says it's not interested in Rivers's property and says the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources is investigating to see if the property can be deemed a hazardous waste site.
The county says after Monday they won't go back on Rivers property to clear out any more junk because their job is done.
The Rivers say they plan to speak to Gov. Easley to try and get his help on the situation.

Ha! They busted his chops
Ha!
They busted his chops and the city of Wilmington dumped thousands of gallons of sewage waste into the Cape Fear...and they are still trying to fixed their problems in Wilmington.
Yeah for the county
About time someone took a look around that area. He is not the only property that needs to be cleaned up. Their are several ppl in that area that need to be looked at. Just curious as to who is next.
Well i am glad to see
Well i am glad to see everyone loves thy neighbor. Some people sits by their computer and talk about his junk, should go out to these car junkyards and see how much they are polluting the ground, but wait they can't pollute the ground because of the nice privacy fences, that stops the gas and oil from going into the ground ,that the owners put around the property ,wrong ,they are just as polluting as the River's property is and nobody mentions that.Well i will say what some of the others have,it is wanted for development and they will soon get it. P.S:Taxpayers get ready to pay more taxes for the workers comp./ tax money that will be needed to pay for the possible health problems of the workers who went there and cleaned up hazardous waste and didn't even have the proper personnal protective equipment on to handle the waste, you know like SCBA,haz-mat white plastic suits,haz-mat protective gloves,haz-mat boots and every other haz-mat equipment that is needed for clean up. The newspapers show alot of workers around that hazardous materials that are supposed to be handled accordingly, and pray to god that the landfill workers wasn't contaminated either,or that will be more worker comp./ tax money gone because of the stupidness of the head supervisors of the county government
Ya know - I can think of so
Ya know - I can think of so many other things that would better warrant this kinda time and energy!
They forgot to clean up one
They forgot to clean up one piece of trash--HIM!!!!
Pat Delair's property
Pat Delair's property downtown is toxic. Where are the people rushing to clean up her private property?
Winnabow "Junkyard"
"the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources is investigating to see if the property can be deemed a hazardous waste site."
YES, they can. Then the property will be worthless to Mr. Junkman. He will be lucky to get a few thousand for it....BUT WAIT, it gets BETTER!!! once the nice buyer (the developer up the road) buys it from MR. Junkyard to "help" him out the land will be re-checked and by a miracle of Mother nature it will be all nice, safe and free from toxins so they can build on it.
Gee, amazing how things work. Maybe the rich developer will give it back to Mr.Junkyard when it is safe ??????????? >;}
I hate it for this man, but
I hate it for this man, but he really should be able to control his property from becoming a distraction. I have a neighbor who has the same problem...he's a packrat. Super-nice, but I belive there must be something about him that leads him unable to get rid of what most people understand to be junk (rusty chairs, furniture, anything free, etc...
He should be thankful they
He should be thankful they didn't rupture a gas line or burst open a water main.
Just some of the things that city/county work crews are known best for doing.
Rivers' property
Mr. Rivers' should not be upset about Brunswick County's expansion and concern for public safety. Contaminated ground water causes widespread damage. Due to his neglect to keep his property clean, he has no reason to be upset since the county came and did the job for him. He should be thanking them for coming and helping since he could not do it alone.
Tard
Boo hoo, your pretty flowers were trampled. Bet that looked very nice with the 55 gallon drums, broken down Pepsi machines and all the other crap you had stashed on your property. The best thing he could now do is shut up and be thankful the job is done.
